ARLINGTON, TX — It appeared to be a wrap following
Jo'Nah Johnson's layup to extend Texas State's lead over UTA to five with 27 seconds left in the game, but the Mavericks went on an 8-1 scoring run to steal the win, 69-67.
Following Johnson's layup, Katie Ferrell missed a 3-point attempt with 19 seconds left and
Lauryn Thompson collected the rebound — her 10th on the night — but a turnover underneath the basket led to a Ferrell 3-pointer to cut the Bobcat lead down to two with 11 seconds left.
UTA went on foul three times in two seconds to send
Da'Nasia Hood to the free throw line with seven seconds left. One free throw extended the Texas State lead back to three. Two seconds later, however, De'Sha Benjamin connected on her first 3-pointer of the contest to tie the game.
As time continued to tick away, a turnover by Texas State on the ensuring inbound allowed UTA to draw up a one-final offensive play in regulation. It resulted in Benjamin being fouled with 0.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter. She went on the sink both free throw attempts.
The Bobcats attempted a court-long heave to draw a potential foul in the closing second, but the pass was picked off.
FROM HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE
"The message to the team after the game was that we can't have total lack of understanding and discipline in a time-and-score scenario multiple times because it snowballs. Not only does that give our opponent momentum, but it also puts pressure on our team. And that was truly the name of the game tonight. Those young women are disappointed, upset, angry, but the good thing is we get them, again, in a day and a half."
