Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hood stays hot, Taylor sets season high in assists as TXST battled UTA

SAN MARCOS, TX — Da'Nasia Hood and Kennedy Taylor showed all 1,057 in attendance on Saturday why the senior duo are standout performers in the Sun Belt Conference despite the Bobcats falling to UTA, 72-65.

Hood, who entered Saturday's contest against the Mavericks as the lone women's basketball student-athlete to average 20-or-more points in conference-only games, maintained the top spot in the league in terms of scoring average in conference play following a 21-point performance. Hood, just a week after tying her career high, set a new career high with 15 rebounds to cap her third-straight double-double performance and fourth in five games.

It's the sixth straight game Hood has scored 20-or-more points and she's reached that mark in all but one conference game. The exception being a 19-point evening at ULM on Dec. 30, 2021, when the Bobcats opened Sun Belt play. Hood has missed adding two more double-doubles to her conference-only total by a single rebound at ULM and Louisiana, respectively.

Assisting Hood on the offensive end Saturday afternoon was Texas State senior guard Kennedy Taylor, who finished with a season-high 12 assists. Taylor's assist total was one shy of tying UTA's team assist total.

It's the first time Taylor has reached double-digit assists since being credited with 10 at Georgia State on Jan. 15, 2022, and it's the first time she's had 12 assists in a single game since Jan. 23, 2021, against ULM.

FROM HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE

"This game today was difficult from the standpoint of that I felt the team really did have an understanding of what it was going to take (to win). Because we had the opportunity to play this team twice this week, we did have time to watch film, make and discuss ways we can adjust. We definitely talked about (UTA being) a good third-quarter team and that's really where we struggled."

GAME NOTES
  • For the second time in her last three games, Kennedy Taylor was credited with double-digit assists as the Texas State senior guard finished with a season-high 12 against the Mavericks on Saturday afternoon. Taylor's 12 assists were one shy of tying her career high, which was set against UTA on Feb. 1, 2020.
  • With her five-assist first half, Kennedy Taylor became the second student-athlete in Texas State women's basketball history to be credited with 500 assists during a career. Following her 12-assist afternoon, Taylor now trails Shelly Borton (1996-99) by 87 assists for the program's all-time career assist mark.
  • For the fourth time in their last five games, the Texas State women's basketball team was credited with 40-or-more rebounds. On Saturday afternoon, the Bobcats brought down 48 rebounds, which is the most against a Division I opponent this season and just 12 shy of the season-high 60 against Arlington Baptist set on Nov. 29, 2021.
