Texas State battles No. 1 Texas; turns attention to upcoming home stand

AUSTIN, Texas — Playing the University of Texas for the third time this calendar year, the No. 1 Longhorns flexed their muscles against Texas State University Tuesday night as the top team in the nation took the match in three sets.

Texas (5-0) raced out to a four-point lead in the early stages of the first set, before Texas State (1-6) battled back to tie the set 6-6 courtesy of a 4-0 scoring run. The two teams traded points before the Longhorns went on a 15-8 run to take the first set.

Texas State opened the second set by scoring the first two points, before Texas answered with a 4-0 run. Jada Gardner and a Texas attach error allowed the Bobcats to tie the set at 4-4. UT scored the next two points and did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

Texas started the third set with a 2-0 lead, before the two squads altered points until Texas State tied the match at 6-6, 7-7 then 9-9. From there, the Longhorns went on a 15-4 scoring to close out the match.

FROM HEAD COACH SEAN HUIET

"We missed some opportunities throughout the match that could've knocked them off their game a little more, so it's just kind of frustrating. I thought Ryann (Torres) did a pretty good job tonight. We didn't pass well (tonight), so we were out of system a lot. And, again, when you're playing the No. 1 team in the country, you have to be better and we just weren't on our game tonight."
