Late Goal Costly for Bobcats

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the first time this season the Texas State soccer team (1-1-1) scored first in a match. However, Stephen F. Austin (1-2-1) netted two goals off corners kicks with the last coming with just under eight minutes to play as the Bobcats fell 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the SFA Soccer Field.
 
Early in the sixth minute, the Lumberjacks sent in a corner kick that saw Carli Arthurs get a head on the ball. Katelyn Chrisman made a leaping save to keep the ball out.

 
Off a corner late in the 16th minute, SFA's Madeline Talbot punched the ball out but right to Kamaria Williams, and she followed by send it back to Bailey Peschel. The junior midfielder sent a cross into the six-yard box that found Kiara Gonzales, who knocked it home for her first goal of the season and put the Bobcats up 1-0.

 
Mya Ulloa nearly doubled the lead in the 18th minute. She received a pass from Madison Humphrey and ripped a shot from just over 20 yards out. The ball got past the goalkeeper hit off the left post and back into play.
 
The Lumberjacks tied the match with just under three minutes left in the first half when Kamryn Jiles knocked in a corner kick from Hailey Kloc.
 
Just 30 seconds into the second half Mya Ulloa received a pass from Olivia Wright and beat a defender to her right. Ulloa unleashed a shot that saw Talbot make a leaping save to keep the match tied.
 
A corner kick early in the 83rd minute saw the ball hit off the right post. The ball bounced back into the 6-yard box where Paige Kanipes hit the ball through traffic and into the back of the net to give the Lumberjacks a 2-1 advantage.
 
The Bobcats took 10 shots in the match with half of them being on frame. Attempting two shots apiece was Gonzales, Peschel and Ulloa.
 
In goal, Chrisman made four saves in her second straight start.
 
Next up for TXST is a trip to take on Rice. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Holloway Field.
