SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team defeated Appalachian State 4-1 in a first round upset at the Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament in Peachtree City, Georgia.
The No.5W-seeded Bobcats won the doubles point after capturing victories in the No. 3 and No. 1 matches.
Chacadyah Israel-Lewis and
Renata Gonzalez defeated Virginia Poggi and Peri Tippins 6-3 on the No. 3 contest.
Hana Kvapilova and
Rishona Israel-Lewis clinched the point with a 6-4 triumph over Maria Zacarias and Ksenia Aleshina.
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead when
Renata Gonzalez won her singles match against Peri Tippins in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Then,
Chacadyah Israel-Lewis defeated Sandra Anglesjo by a score of 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 5 match to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
App State avoided being shut out and closed the gap to 3-1 when
Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez fell 6-1, 7-5 against Poggi.
Hana Kvapilova clinched the victory and remained undefeated in Sun Belt No. 1 matches when she won a 6-4, 6-2 decision against Maria Jose Zacarias. She improves her conference record to 6-0 and is 13-1 overall in No. 1 singles this season.
The victory was Texas State's first Sun Belt Conference win this season, and the Bobcats improve to 6-12 overall.
Texas State will play top-seeded UT Arlington in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championship Friday at 2 p.m. at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. The Mavs won both regular-season matches between the two teams, 4-0 in Arlington on March 28 and 4-3 in San Marcos on April 10.
