Pitchers Curtail Potent Sooners Offense

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Four Texas State pitchers shut down an Oklahoma offense that ranked in the top 10 in the nation coming into Wednesday game as the Bobcats came away with a 5-2 victory at Bobcat Ballpark.
 
With the win, TXST improved to 9-13 on the season while the Sooners are now 12-8 overall. It was the Bobcats second win over a Big XII Conference opponent this season and snapped OU's six-game winning streak.
 
Picking up the win on the mound was Zeke Wood (2-1). He struck out four while giving up a run on five hits in five innings. Ben Abram (1-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs on four hits in two frames of action.
 
Austin Smith tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and Trevis Sundgren did not allow a run in an inning of relief while striking out two. Otto Wofford closed the door on OU in the ninth.
 
Justin Thompson was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Also plating a run was Bryce Bonner, Cole Coffey and Jose Gonzalez.
 
With the game scoreless, Tucker Redden started off the bottom of the fourth by drawing a walk. Bonner followed by lacing the first pitch he saw down the right field line for an RBI triple. The graduate transfer scored a pitch later when Coffey grounded out to the second baseman to put Texas State ahead 2-0.
 
The Sooners cut their deficit in half on an RBI single in the next half inning.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Jose Gonzalez hit a 1-2 offering the other way into the net over the left field wall for his second home run of the season to put the Bobcats back up by two.
 
Isaiah Ortega-Jones was issued a free pass with an out in the seventh. Thompson followed by smashing an 0-2 pitch to left center to increase the lead to 5-1.
 
With two outs in the ninth, Tyler Hardman hit an RBI triple to right field to cut the lead down to three. The next two batters walked to load the bases for Logan Kohler. Wofford induced him to hit a high pop up to Jaxon Williams to end the game.
 
Next for TXST is a home weekend Sun Belt Conference series against ULM that begins on Friday at 6 p.m.
