SAN MARCOS, Texas – In a contest that was decided in the third set of the final match, the Texas State women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss against Arkansas State Sunday at the Bobcat Tennis Center
This contest began with Texas State jumping out to an early 1-0 lead when the Bobcats earned the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. The day began with Arkansas State's Shelby King and Jill Morse winning a 6-2 decision over
Nikita Pradeep and
Chacadyah Israel-Lewis on the No. 2 court.
Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez and
Renata Gonzalez tied the doubles score at one match for each team with a 6-3 victory over Arkansas State's Nejla Zukic and Yasmine Humbert in a No. 3 match.
Texas State clinched the doubles point when top-seeded
Hana Kvapilova and
Rishona Israel-Lewis edged Thea Rice and Hunter Roper, 7-5.
The Bobcats moved ahead 3-0 when
Renata Gonzalez and
Hana Kvapilova won their singles matches. Gonzalez defeated Yasmine Humbert by a score of 6-4, 6-2 in a No. 6 singles match, and Kvapilova defeated Thea Rice in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Arkansas State came back to win the final four decisions in singles play. Shelby King won a 6-4, 6-0 decision over
Nikita Pradeep on the No. 3 court. Zukic edged
Chacadyah Israel-Lewis, 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 4 match.
Rishona Israel-Lewis also suffered a 6-3, 7-5 setback against Hunter Roper on the No. 2 court.
The No. 5 match between
Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez and Amelia Guevremont featured tiebreakers in the first two sets. Murcia-Rodriguez won the first tiebreaker, 9-7, to claim the first set, 7-6. Then, Guevremont came back to win the next set after outlasting Murcia-Rodriguez 10-8 in the second tiebreaker. Guevremont went on to clinch the victory for the Red Wolves by winning the third set, 6-2.
It is the third straight loss for the Bobcats, who fell to 4-6 overall this season and 0-3 in Sun Belt Conference play. Sunday's match also marks the second time Texas State has dropped a 4-3 decision against the Red Wolves this season.
Arkansas State evened its record to 4-4 and 2-2 in Sun Belt matches.
WHAT'S NEXT
Texas State will play seven straight road contests before returning to the Bobcat Tennis Complex for their final home match of the season. The Bobcats begin the road trip next Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Tarleton State on March 27 and UT Arlington on March 28.
Texas State also plays at, No. 2 Texas on March 30, Prairie View on March 31, Louisiana on April 3, ULM on April 4, and UTSA on April 9. Texas State closes out the regular season with a home match against UTA on April 10.
