Texas State’s late run earns Bobcats second road win of the season

HOUSTON, Texas — The defense efforts of seniors Da'Nasia Hood and Kennedy Taylor provided the difference in Texas State's 58-54 win at Houston Baptist Thursday night.

With 34 seconds left in the game and the score tied at 54, Taylor was credited with her third steal of the game when she forced an Enya Maguire turnover off a Huskies' inbound play. Taylor broke away from Maguire's potential defensive efforts to push Texas State (4-2) ahead 56-54 with 30 seconds left in the game.

Houston Baptist immediately called a timeout to talk an offensive strategy.

As time ticked away, the Huskies attempted to run a potential game-tying set play, but Hood stepped in front of Timia Jefferson as she drove to the basket. Jefferson was called for an offensive foul as Hood drew the charge, which was Jefferson's fifth foul.

Julija Vujakovic fouled Ja'Kayla Bowie, who went on to sink two free throw attempts to push the Bobcats' lead to four. The Huskies attempted a 3-pointer with six seconds left and then missed a layup attempt with Bowie pulling down the game-sealing rebound as the buzzer sounded.

FROM HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE

"This is one of the toughest venues to play in, but I think it's a great venue to test our team. It's interesting in that I've played here and won and played here and lost. So, in scheduling tonight's game, I knew it was going to be a tough contest. Just before we left San Marcos, I talked with (Texas State men's basketball head coach) Coach (Terrence Johnson) and we reminisced and talked about the time they played here and what the venue was like. It allowed me to stress how tough tonight's game would be. The X's and O's is something that came with the game, but as far as the intangibles, when you're able to touch the people behind you, the loudest and the energy from tonight, it was great to see how team play in this atmosphere."
