SAN MARCOS, Texas – The season opening five-game road swing comes to an end this weekend for the Texas State men's basketball team (1-2) with two games at the Good Sam Empire Classic held on the campus of CSUN. The Bobcats tip off the tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. CT against Dixie State (1-1) at The Matadome.
Depending on the result on Friday, Saturday's contest will take place at either 2 p.m. CT or 10:30 p.m. CT against either Eastern Washington or CSUN.
Friday's game will be streamed through the CSUN athletic website. Saturday's stream will be on either ESPN+ (if vs. CSUN) or via the CSUN athletic website (if vs. EWU).
Brant Freeman will have the radio call for both games with Friday's being on The Varsity Network/KTSW 89.9 FM and Saturday's broadcast location either on The Varsity Network/KTSW 89.9 FM or exclusively through the Texas State athletic website.
LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS
Through three games,
Caleb Asberry is averaging a team-high 14.3 ppg on 50.0 (16-for-32) percent shooting from the field. The senior has also knocked down a team leading eight three-pointers and paces the squad with five steals.
Mason Harrell and
Isiah Small are putting up 9.7 and 9.0 ppg, respectively. Small leads the team with 7.0 rpg, eight assists and two blocks. Harrell comes in with seven assists and four steals on the young season.
Drue Drinnon has been the top contributor off the bench at 8.3 ppg. The junior has made 8-of-16 shots, is 4-for-9 from beyond the arc and made all five free throw attempts.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Dixie State is coming off a win last Friday at home against Southern Utah, 83-76. The Trailblazers opened the season with a 97-63 loss at No. 1 ranked Gonzaga. Both Cameron Gooden (12.5 ppg) and Hunter Schofield (17.0 ppg) are averaging double-figures scoring. DSU is shooting 43.2% from the field, 34.1% on three-pointers and just 57.1% at the charity stripe.
Eastern Washington enters the tournament 1-2 on the season with losses to Nevada (91-76) and UC Davis (84-76) while picking up a win Monday over NAIA program Walla Walla (111-71). The Eagles are led by Linton Acliese III at 20.3 ppg and 9.7 rpg. Also putting up double-digits in points are Rylan Bergersen (10.0), Ethan Price (14.0) and Steele Venters (19.0). EWU comes in with a 44.3 FG%, 31.2 3FG% and 71.3 FT%.
CSUN has dropped both of its games this season to Notre Dame (68-52) and USC (89-49). Atin Wright paces the Matadors at 11.0 ppg. Darius Brown II is putting up 9.5 ppg along with a team-high five assists. As a team, CSUN is shooting 37.7% from the floor, has made 34.5% of its three-point attempts and has converted 73.3% at the free throw line.
SERIES HISTORIES
Friday will be the first time that Texas State and Dixie State have met. It will also be the first-ever meeting between the Bobcats and EWU should they match up on Saturday.
TXST has twice played CSUN with the Matadors winning both contests. The last time the teams met was Nov. 17, 2009 in the NIT Tip Off Tournament on the campus of Arizona State. CSUN came away with an 85-82 victory. First time the teams played was Dec. 7, 1979 in Northridge with the Bobcats falling 83-78.
