CONWAY, S.C. — The Texas State football program will look to bounce back from a one-possession defeat last weekend when the Bobcats travel to Conway, S.C., to face off against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
The matchup is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT / 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 20 and will be streamed on ESPN+.
LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS
- For the second straight season, the Texas State special teams unit returned a punt for a touchdown. Last season, Jeremiah Haydel returned a punt 91 yards for a touchdown against UTSA on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020. Fourteen months later, Kenny Haynes was credited with a 0-yard punt return score after following on a loose football in the end zone after the Bobcats blocked a Georgia Southern punt attempt on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021.
- Saturday's game will mark the fourth game in the Eastern Time Zone for Texas State and the second conference game outside of the Central Time Zone. Texas State picked up a win over FIU in Miami, but dropped contest at Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Atlanta Georgia. A win Saturday would mark the first victory against a conference foe in the Eastern Time Zone for Texas State under head coach Jake Spavital.
- Texas State sophomore place kicker Seth Keller has converted 13 of 16 field goal attempts this season and his 81.25 conversion rate ranks as the third-best field goal percentage in the Sun Belt Conference. Keller's 21 made field goals for his career are the seventh most in program history and just 15 back of shying the program record. Keller is one field goal back of tying the program's single-season record of 14 (Andrew Ireland, 2008; Robbie Roberson, 1990) and two back of breaking it.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
- Last weekend's loss to Georgia State snapped the Chanticleer's 12-game home winning streak, which was one shy of tying the program's record of 13 straight home wins set from 2012 to 2014.
- Freshman defensive end Josiah Steward is tied with Tarron Jackson (2019) for the Coastal Carolina single-season sack record with 10.0. Steward is a 6-foot-2, 245-pound native of Everett, Mass., where he played both tight end and defensive end at Everett, Mass. He was a three-star recruit by 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN, all of which ranked him as a top-10 prospect in the state of Massachusetts.
- Coastal Carolina's offense has scored 27-or-more points in every conference game this season. The Chanticleers scored a season-high 59 points against ULM, while also being held to a conference-low 27 points at App State.
SERIES HISTORY
- Of all the Sun Belt Conference opponents, Texas State has the shortest series history with Coastal Carolina as the two football programs have only met three times since the Chanticleers joined the conference in 2017.
- Texas State is 1-1 all-time against Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., with the lone win coming on Oct. 28, 2017, when the Bobcats won 27-7. Texas State has scored at least 20 points in both matchups against the Chanticleers in South Carolina after scoring 21 on Nov. 30, 2019.
- Last season, Coastal Carolina knocked off Texas State, 49-14, in the first-ever meeting between the two teams in San Marcos.
