SAN MARCOS, Texas — In the box score, it went down as
Kennedy Taylor's third assist of Texas State's 82-48 win over Huston-Tillotson Sunday afternoon, but in the record books, it just meant more.
With 6:15 remaining before halftime, Taylor, a 5-foot-3 guard, pulled down a defensive rebound off an Ariana Smith missed jumper, drove the length of the floor then made a pass to
Ja'Kayla Bowie on the baseline. Because Taylor drove so far into the paint, Bowie was left wide open and knocked down the 15-footer with ease to be on the scoring end of Taylor's 400th career assist.
The assist made Taylor, a senior, just the third Bobcat women's basketball player to be credited with 400-or-more assists throughout her playing career. Taylor joins the program's career assist leader Shelly Borton (1986-90) and Taeler Deer (2014-18) as the only members of the club. Taylor etched her name alongside Deer as the only women's basketball student-athletes under head coach
Zenarae Antoine to accomplish the feat.
Taylor, who led the team in assists in 19 of 22 games last season, now has 16 assists through two games this season after opening the new season with nine at then-No. 7 Baylor earlier this week.
FROM HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE
"I'm very happy we had an opportunity open up at home in front our fans to start out the season. Obviously, we had a tremendous task on the road to open up on the road, so getting back to our friendly confines is really what I'm excited for as well as giving our players that opportunity to be back on our home floor, sleep in their own beds and really just show everyone how hard they've been working through COVID and through the summer leading up to now. I'm very proud of particular pieces of our game today, but there are still some areas we have to get better in."
