Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Texas State sweeps ULM behind trio of dominant performances

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Texas State women's basketball program came into the weekend wanting two wins and the Bobcats closed out the weekend with two wins following a 64-50 win over ULM on Saturday afternoon.

It marked the second win for Texas State (6-5, 3-3) over ULM (2-10, 0-6) in 24 hours to get back to .500 in Sun Belt Conference play after three weekends.

"Very similar to yesterday but for a different reason, I'm really proud of the team today largely because it was really important to have a scenario at home in preparation for the next game to be able to come in and be prepared to play and fight and battle all the way to the end," said Texas State women's basketball head coach Zenarae Antoine. "I really mean this with all sincerity: this wasn't the 11th and 12th-place teams that played here today. There's no way that (ULM) is a 12th-place team and it's pretty obvious our team has been busting our tails as well."

The first quarter was dominated by ULM as the Warhawks shot 50 percent (6-12) from the field on one end and held Texas State to 14.3 percent (2-14) on the other end to take a 13-6 lead into the second. From there, though, the Bobcats outscored the Warhawks in every quarter for the remainder of the game.

Texas State took its first lead of the game when Da'Nasia Hood connect on her only 3-point shot of the contest with 3:37 remaining before halftime. The Bobcats, behind Hood's 19-point, 9-rebound performance, Lauryn Thompson's 23 points, 11 rebounds and Kennedy Taylor's 12 assist and seven points, never allowed the Warhawks to take the lead again.

ULM did, however, manage to tie the game at 27-27 on a jumper just outside the paint with 6:49 left in the third period. Thompson, though, responded to the tie with a personal 4-0 scoring run to push the Bobcats back out in front.

ULM got to within one at 33-32 minutes later, but two free throws from Hood combined with a Thompson, who scored a team-high 10 points during the third, layup and a 3-pointer from Tianna Eaton sent the Bobcats into the four quarter with an 8-point lead.

The Bobcat lead quickly reached double-digits as Hood knocked down a turnaround jumper just 15 seconds in the fourth. She followed with two more free throws and another pull-up jump to give Texas State a 46-32 lead. Hood, like Thompson in the third, finished with a team-high 10 points during the fourth quarter as Bobcats closed out the win.

Texas State will return to action on Friday, Jan. 29 when the Bobcats travel to Lafayette, La., for a two-game weekend road series at Louisiana.
