LAFAYETTE, La. — Da'Nasia Hood's potential game-winning 3-point basket with 2.6 seconds left in the game was centimeters to the right of going through the net as Texas State ultimately fell to Louisiana, 66-64, Friday night.
After Louisiana (6-5, 5-1) converted two layup attempts within the game's opening minute, Texas State (6-6, 3-4) responded with a 9-0 scoring run fuel by two baskets from
Ja'Kayla Bowie and
Avionne Alexander to start the Bobcats' confidence. Even after the Ragin' Cajuns made it a one-possession game at 11-8, Hood, who finished with a game-high 17 points, capitalized off a Skyler Goodwin turnover and converted a layup to give TXST a two-possession lead heading into the game's second quarter.
Hood's basket, like Bowie and Alexander's earlier in the first, ignited a quick 4-0 scoring run — on a
Gabby Standifer layup and two
Lauryn Thompson free throws — just 63 seconds into the second quarter to extend Texas State's lead to 17-8.
From there, the two teams traded points until Hood, again, extended Texas State's lead to nine at 23-14 following a layup with 6:27 remaining before halftime. Brandi Williams capped a 9-0 Louisiana scoring run to tie the game with a second-chance 3-point jumper three minutes later.
However, the Bobcats quickly responded with a Thompson layup, Standifer second-chance layup and two
Kennedy Taylor free throws to make it 29-23 with 1:19 left to play in the second quarter. Taylor, again, sank two free throws to send Texas State into the locker rooms for halftime with a 33-28 lead.
Texas State's halftime lead was quickly extended to seven when Thompson connected on two more free throws just 59 seconds into the third quarter. Bowie, who scored 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting, and Hood, again, combined to halt a Louisiana response on the scoreboard when the duo combined for a layup and second-chance 3-pointer to extend TXST's lead from three to eight midway through the quarter. However, an Alexandria Goodly 3-pointer with 14 seconds left in the third quarter sent the game into the final 10-minute stanza tied at 46.
The two teams traded jumpers and layups to open the fourth quarter and neither team took a two-possession lead until Goodly connected on a second 3-point with 7:24 remaining to give Louisiana a five-point advantage.
The Bobcats battled back, however, and re-took the lead as Taylor, who scored 12 points on the night, sank her second 3-point shot in as many attempts to give Texas State a 62-59 lead with 3:33 left to play. Goodly, though, answered to re-tie the game 30 seconds later.
Thompson, who scored 12 points and was 8 of 8 from the free throw line, and Ty'reona Doucet traded points to put the game into yet another tie at 64-64 with 2:43 on the clock. The clock ticked away as the score remained the same until Skyler Goodwin knocked down a pair of three throws with two seconds left in the game.
Down two points with two seconds remaining, Texas State called a timeout to advance the ball and draw up a potential game-winning play, which saw the ball find a way into Hood's hands but the shot was just off the mark.
Texas State and Louisiana will wrap up its four-game season series on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m.
