Two Late Scores Propel Bobcats to Victory in Sun Belt Opener

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Trailing by a goal late in the match, the Texas State soccer team scored twice in two-and-a-half-minute span with less than six minutes to play for the come from behind 3-2 victory Sunday over Louisiana at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.

The victory improves the Bobcats to 1-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Ragin' Cajuns drop to 2-2-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in conference play.

Early in the ninth minute, Baily Peschel unleashed a shot that was blocked by a defender. Sydney Kammer was there for the rebound but got too much under the ball to send it high over the crossbar.

The breakthrough for the Bobcats came early in the 42nd minute. Wimberley Wright sent in a low cross from the right side that got by the diving goalkeeper. Olivia Wright was able to get a shot off while battling a defender but the ball was kept out by the keeper's feet. Ally Kewish was there for the rebound, knocking the ball into the back of the net to put TXST up 1-0.

Following the score, the Cajuns put increased pressure on the Bobcats' backline that resulted in two shots. The first was easily handled by Beth Agee in the 43rd minute. The second came with five seconds left as Karleen Bedre, who lifted a long shot from the far side that saw Agee leap and just get enough on the ball to keep it out before the horn sounded for halftime.

In the second half, Texas State held Louisiana without a shot until late in the 73rd minute off the foot of Caitlyn Ferguson. The visitors nearly tied the match 90 seconds later when Lizzie Mayfield ripped a low shot that clanked off the inside left post, ricocheted back across the front of the goal and was then cleared away from danger.

Midway through the 76th minute, the ball found its way to Kiana Leger who completed a short pass to Ferguson. The Cajun then sent a low shot into the bottom right corner to knot the score 1-1.

Just over a minute later Una Einarsdottir took a long, low shot. Agee lost track of the ball as a defender missed trying to clear the shot resulting in Louisiana taking a 2-1 advantage.

Peschel hit a long ball towards goal that deflected off two Louisiana defenders' heads and landed near Kiara Gonzales. She unleashed a left-footed shot that got under the crossbar to tie the match 2-2 with just under six minutes left on the clock.

Two-and-a-half minutes later, Gonzales attempted a low cross from the right side that hit off a defender's foot. The ball bounced back towards the sophomore, who battled a defender and won. She lofted a short cross back into the six-yard box that Emma Jones flicked into the left corner for match-winning score.

Pacing the Bobcats with three shots were Gonzales, Jones and Kewish. Both Peschel and W. Wright took two shots apiece.

In goal, Agee made five saves to increase her season total to 40.

Next up for TXST is a four-match road stretch that begins on Friday with a 7 p.m. contest at Little Rock.
