DAVIS, Calif. — The Texas State University earned another win on the 2020 season when it knocked off Saint Mary's, 5-2, to start the final day of the Capital Classic. The Bobcats, however, fell to UC Davis, 4-2, to close out the five-game, three-day slate in California.
Against Saint Mary's to open the day, Texas State got the party started early as Baliee Carter,
Christiana McDowell and
Tara Oltmann all reached base to open the bottom of the first.
Hailey MacKay pushed the Bobcats ahead when Carter scored from third on a groundout. McDowell was the next to score when she raced home from third on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of
ArieAnn Bell.
Two innings later, MacKay struck again when she doubled home Oltmann, who reached base for the second time in as many plate appearances.
In the circle,
Meagan King (4-2) put up zeros over the first three innings, before Saint Mary's capitalized on a one-out double with back-to-back two-out hits to score two and make it a 3-2 game. Texas State responded in the bottom half of the frame when Sarah Vanderford launched her first career home run over the centerfield fence. A Bobcat insurance run was added in the bottom of the sixth when
Kylie George singled home
Marisa Cruz from second.
McCann (S, 4) replaced King in the circle to start the fifth inning and retired the six batters, before the Gaels managed to load the bases with two outs. However, a flyout to centerfield ended the threat and sealed the win.
The third inning is when all the damage was done by the Texas State and UC Davis offense.
Maya Zavala led off the inning with a triple to right-centerfield, then scored on a groundout by George. Oltmann made it 2-0, Bobcats, when she singled home Carter three batters later.
However, UC Davis put up a four spot in the run column on five hits and one Bobcat error in its half of the third. McCann entered the circle for starter
Dalilah Barrera in the inning and proceeded to throw three consecutive scoreless innings to keep it a two-run contest. But, despite Aggie starting pitcher Kenedi Brown allowing at least one baserunner over the next four innings, Texas State was not able to string together the timely hits to bring a runner home.
Texas State (12-7) will return to action on Wednesday, March 4 when the Bobcats host Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at 5 p.m. CT.
