SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman forward
Chelsea Johnson matched her career-high of 14 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as the Texas State women's basketball team (8-14, 1-10 Sun Belt) fell 59-47 Saturday afternoon to Appalachian State (7-15, 4-7 Sun Belt) in Strahan Arena.
Â
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 7-2 lead that forced an early timeout by head coach
Zenarae Antoine Antoine. In response, the Bobcats scored seven straight points with five coming from
Avionne Alexander. The visitors would retake the lead but TXST stayed within three, trailing 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Â
In the second, the Bobcats clamped down defensively and held APP to just six points on 2-of-10 shooting. Johnson netted six of her points in the period to help the team take a 25-23 advantage into halftime.
Â
The third quarter saw Texas State be outscored 18-7 as the Mountaineers were 7-for-15 (46.7%) from the field and 3-of-4 at the free throw line. The visitors never looked back as they maintained at least a seven point lead the rest of the game.
Â
Johnson finished shooting 5-of-9 and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the charity stripe. The Shreveport, Louisiana native grabbed six offensive boards as well.
Â
Also reaching double-figures was
Bailey Holle with 10 as she knocked down TXST's only two three-pointers of the contest.
