SAN MARCOS, Texas — Seniors Brooke and
Bailey Holle closed out their Texas State careers inside Strahan Arena as winners as Texas State University knocked off Georgia State University, 67-62, on Saturday afternoon in the final regular-season home game for the Bobcats this season.
"I'm just really excited that we had the opportunity to – and not to negate that Georgia State is a good team — get two wins on this homestand to cap Bailey and Brooke's senior year and that's so important to me," said Texas State women's basketball head coach
Zenarae Antoine. "They said pain is temporary, but victory is forever, and I really do believe that.
"Just to have them at home with their families here and their teammates and to be able to have this opportunity — and both are very deserving of the time and minutes they play — it's a cherry on top of two stories career."
Brooke Holle, who has experienced a lot of big moments throughout her Texas State (12-15, 5-11) playing career, added one more midway through the fourth quarter of Saturday's game.
As Georgia State (8-20, 5-12) was attempting a fourth-quarter rally after entering the quarter with the Bobcats leading 46-44, Brook was on the receiving end of one of
Kennedy Taylor's game-high eight assists when she connected on a 3-point shot with 5:13 remaining in the game to extend Texas State's lead to 57-50. Brooke, who was also fouled on the shot, converted the and-one free throw opportunity to make it 58-50, before eventually forcing a Georgia State timeout with 4:56 left.
After Brooke made her 133rd career 3-pointer, which moves her into seventh on the school's all-time list, the Panther defense became hesitant to leave her in the corner, which gave Taylor opportunities to drive to the basket for a layup.
Taylor converted the old-fashion three-point play with 3:58 remaining in the game and push the Bobcats out to a 61-53 advantage. Taylor, again, took advantage of the defender's choice to make it a 10-point Texas State lead with 2:22 left in the game.
Georgia State cut it to three with 15 seconds left following a 3-point basket, but Da'nasia Hood, who finished with a team-high 18 points, sank two free throws with 10.2 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to seal the Bobcat win.
"Brooke and I just tried to pretend that it was just any other game, because we didn't want our emotions to get the best of us," Bailey said. "And the team did a really good job of being locked in, because they wanted this win for us just as much as we wanted it."
Texas State will return to the hardwood on Thursday, March 5 when the Bobcats travel to Monroe, La., to play ULM at 6 p.m. CT.
