Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Holle joins exclusive club as Texas State wins third in a row

MONROE, La — With 9:02 remaining in the fourth quarter of Texas State's 59-53 win over ULM Thursday night, Brooke Holle knew that her fourth basket of the game meant more than just pushing the Bobcats out to a six-point lead at the time.

"I knew, coming into the game, I needed nine (points), so I did know when I got it, but I was really trying to focus on the game," Brooke said. "I didn't really tell anyone that I could get it this game, because I really wanted to keep it to myself and just focus on winning. But I was celebrating on my way back and no one knew what was happening."

Brooke's pull-up jumper from the charity stripe pushed her point total to nine and forever etched her name in the Texas State women's basketball record books as she became the 19th Bobcat to score 1,000 points throughout her playing career. She added five more points throughout the remainder of the fourth quarter to finish the game with 1,005 career points, which moved her passed Dawn Bolner (1990-94) for 18th on the school's all-time scoring list heading into Saturday's game at Louisiana.

"It's definitely something that I've had in the back of my mind all year; I just really wanted to get it this year," Brooke said. "I'm just happy we got the win, honestly. I really wouldn't have cared if I would have gotten it and we would've lost, so I'm just really happy that the team was able to pull it out and get the win."

The dramatics continued for Texas State (13-15, 6-11) after Holle's milestone as ULM (3-25, 1-16) battled back to take a 51-50 lead on the backend of two Whitney Goins free throws. It marked the first time the Warhawks led since 6-5 at the 7:13 mark of the first quarter.

After a brief, two-minute scoring drought by both teams, Texas State re-took the lead when Chelsea Johnson took a pass from DaNasia Hood and converted a layup opportunity with 2:52 remaining in the game. The Warhawks went down on the other end and missed two layups, before Kennedy Taylor gathered the rebound and brought the ball up the count as the clock was ticking away.

Brooke sank her third base-line jumper of the game despite being fouled at the two-minute mark of the fourth quarter. Her basket, combined with the and-one free throw, gave the Bobcats a 55-51 lead.

After a minute ticked off the game clock, ULM cut its deficit to three with the frontend of two free throws. Following another Warhawk free throw with 40 seconds left, Texas State called a timeout before running an offensive set that drained nearly 30 seconds off the clock before Hood missed a jumper.

ULM collected the loose ball and called a timeout with nine seconds left. As the Warhawks were attempting to inbound the ball, Bailey Holle stole the pass and found Kennedy Taylor, who knocked down a pair of free throws with three seconds left to make it a four-point game. Brooke followed with two more after ULM was issued a technical foul in the closing seconds.

"There was a sense of calm but also a sense of focus," said Texas State women's basketball head coach Zenarae Antoine. "Every timeout that was called or every transition when we had an opportunity to talk as a team, we had five women constantly talking about what needed to be done and those corrections as well as what we needed to do pressing and moving on.

"I can also tell you there was a true level of respect for ULM and how hard they played and weren't going to give up. It's important, through everything that went on during the game, to continue to uplift the student-athletes in order to get the confidence to get those stops down the stretch."

Texas State will look to continue to improve its postseason conference opportunities when the Bobcats travel to Lafayette, La., to play Louisiana on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m. CT.
