DAVIS, Calif. — The Texas State University softball team added to its win total on Saturday when the Bobcats knocked off UC Davis, 6-2, after falling to Utah State, 4-2, to start Saturday's action in the Capital Classic.
Texas State (11-6) opened Saturday's doubleheader by scoring a first-inning run when
Bailee Carter scored from second on a double to left field off the bat of
Tara Oltmann, who finished with six hits over the two games. Utah State (8-10), however, responded by tying the game on a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the first.
The Aggies went on to score three more to extend their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third off a two-out single followed by a two-out double. From there,
Meagan King (3-2) and
Tori McCann did not allow any more runs from the Utah State offense, while the Bobcats attempted to rally.
However, the only inning when Texas State plated a run came in the top of the fifth when Oltmann doubled down on her double total with her second double of the doubleheader as she scored Carter, again. The Bobcats, though, only mustered one more baserunner against Utah State with a one-out walk in the top of the sixth.
In the second game of the twinbill, Texas State put up five first-inning runs, before taking on a single insurance run in the top of the sixth to earn a bounce-back win over UC Davis.
This time it was
ArieAnn Bell and
Sara Vanderford who had the run-scoring doubles as both players had one-out, two-run doubles in the game's opening frame. Vanderford made it 5-0 early when she scored on a grounder off the bat of
Maya Zavala.
Like Utah State earlier in the day, UC Davis (10-9) responded in the bottom of the first with a run-scoring, two-out single with the second run scoring on a throwing error.
A throwing error came back on the Aggies when
Christiana McDowell scored on a throwing error by UC Davis' right fielder in the top of the sixth.
Dalilah Barrera (4-1) nearly threw the seven-inning complete game after tossing 109 total pitches to 27 batters and scattering only two hits, striking out five and issuing four walks. McCann (S, 3) came in and shut the door on UC Davis after the Aggies had put two on base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Texas State returns to the diamond on Sunday, March 1 when the Bobcats conclude the Capital Classic with an 11 a.m. CT game against St. Mary's before playing UC Davis, again, at 1:30 p.m. CT.
