McCann cans Sacramento State’s offense as Bobcats earn 10th win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For the second consecutive game, the Texas State University pitching staff kept its opponent off the scoreboard for the duration of the game as the Bobcats opened the Capital Classic with a 2-0 win at Sacramento State on Friday afternoon.

Texas State (10-5) have now thrown 14 consecutive scoreless innings after topping Tulsa, 2-0, on Sunday, Feb. 23. Friday's performance against the Hornets marks the first complete-game shutout by a Bobcat pitcher this season since Meagan King tossed a five-inning complete-game shutout in a 12-0 win over Saint Louis on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Tori McCann (4-3) kept the Sacramento State offense at bay for the game's first five innings, while the Bobcat offense used small ball to produce the game's only two runs in the top of the sixth.

Marisa Cruz, who finished the game with two hits in three plate appearances, singled to third base to open the top of the sixth, before Bailee Carter drew a five-pitch walk to force a Hornet pitching change.

Christiana McDowell dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance both Cruz and Carter a base. Tara Oltmann followed with a one-out, bases-clearing single to right-centerfield to push the Bobcats ahead. Hailey MacKay, who also ended the game with two hits, attempted to keep the rally going with a five-pitch walk, too. However, a strikeout and grounder to third left her on base.

Now with the lead, McCann struck out the first batter of the sixth, before immediately recording the second out as a Hornet batter fouled out to third. However, Sacramento State put two consecutive runners on base with a single, then fielder's choice. But, a flyout ended the threat.

Again, Texas State attempted to add insurance runs when Samara Lagway led off the seventh with a single. After she was erased on a fielder's choice, Cruz singled to centerfield and advanced to second a throw that tried to get Kylie George, who pinch ran for Caitlyn Rogers, out at third. Despite having runners at second and third with only one away, the Bobcats record back-to-back outs to end their half of the seventh.

McCann, looking for her first career seven-inning complete game shutout, returned to the circle for the bottom of the seventh and issued only a walk before closing the door with back-to-back outs.

Texas State will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 29 when the Bobcats play Utah State at 11 a.m. CT, then UC Davis at 4 p.m. CT.
