HOUSTON – Trailing entering the ninth inning, the Texas State baseball team (3-2) scored four runs in a rally attempt that fell short 7-5 to Houston Baptist (1-4) Wednesday at Husky Field.
Â
HBU got off to a 1-0 lead as Parker Wayne hit a solo home run to left field on the first pitch of the game from TXST.
Â
The lead was short lived as
Wesley Faison cranked a shot over the left field wall in the next half inning. The homer was the first of the junior's collegiate career.
Â
In the bottom of the second, the Huskies answered back with a run on a single by Wayne to retake the lead. They added two more on a double by Ryne Edmondson to go up 4-1.
Â
HBU would go on to score two in the third and one in the fourth to increase their advantage to six runs.
Â
The ninth inning began with back-to-back singles from
Justin Thompson and Faison. Two batters later,
Cole Coffey hit a blooper down the left field line that the outfielder missed for a single to load the bases. A ground by
Peyton Lewis got the force out at second, but the sophomore beat out the throw to first bring home a run.
Â
Junior
John Wuthrich came on as a pinch hitter and blasted the first pitch he saw down the left field line for a three-run bomb to make it a 7-5 contest. However, the Huskies' pitcher induced a fly out to end the game.
Â
Taking the loss was
Isaac Ponce after surrendering four runs in 1.2 innings of his first career start. Chris Burns was awarded the win in which he struck out three in five shutout frames.
Â
Garrett Herrmann threw 4.2 innings with four strikeouts and Tristian Stivors posted two strikeouts in his inning of relief. Also seeing action on the mound for TXST was
Jacob Little (0.2 IP).
Â
Both Coffey and Faison were 2-for-4 at the plate.
Chase Evans drew the team's lone walk of the game and also reached base on a strikeout via a wild pitch.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a three-game series against Lamar at Bobcat Ballpark. First game of the set is on Friday at 6 p.m.
