Bobcats Split Doubleheader with Seawolves

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (2-1) split Saturday's doubleheader with Stony Brook (1-2) at Bobcat Ballpark. The Bobcats took game one 6-0 and fell in the night cap 3-2.

GAME 1 – TEXAS STATE 6, STONY BROOK 0
Strong pitching performances from right-handers Trevis Sundgren (1-0) and Otto Wofford helped TXST post the earliest shutout in a season since 2013. Sundgren went seven innings and did not allow his first hit or baserunner until the fifth. The Silsbee, Texas native also struck out six without allowing a walk. Wofford tossed the final two frames, striking out two and giving up one hit in his collegiate debut.

Taking the loss for the Seawolves was Sam Turcotte (0-1) after giving up two runs on four hits in five innings.

In the second, Justin Thompson singled through the left side with two gone in the frame. A 3-2 offering to Cole Coffey saw him blast it over the right field wall for his first home run of the season and second of his career.

The senior first baseman plated two more runs in the sixth on a double to right center to give him a single-game career best of four RBI.

Colton Moore brought in the fifth run of the game in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to right field. That same inning saw Coffey score for the second time on the day when he crossed home on a wild pitch.

For the game, Coffey was 3-for-4 at the plate. Both John Wuthrich and Thompson recorded two hits apiece. Recording the first stolen base of the season for the Bobcats was Chase Evans.

GAME 2 – STONY BROOK 3, TEXAS STATE 2
After 11 base knocks in the first game of the day, Texas State's bats were stifled by Stony Brook's pitchers with just two in the night cap. Both of the hits also drove in both of the Bobcats' runs.

Peyton Lewis hit a high pop up that landed in the Bermuda Triangle of center field for a single with two outs in the fifth. On the pitch, Isaiah Ortega-Jones broke for second and was able to come all the way around to score. His run cut the deficit to 2-1 after the Seawolves scored twice in the top half of the frame.

Will Hollis knotted the score an inning later when he sent a 2-1 offering over the scoreboard in right field.

Stony Brook scored the game-winning run in the eighth when Ellis Schwartz doubled to right center with two outs.

Sophomore right-hander Matthew Nicholas (0-1) took the loss after surrendering a run on two hits in two innings of relief while striking out three. Nick DeGennaro went seven innings and surrendered two runs and had six strikeouts. Earned the save, his first of the year, with two scoreless innings of relief and posting three strikeouts was Brandon Bonanno.

Reece Gould made his first career start and tossed four shutout innings and struck out two. Garrett Herrmann threw 2.1 innings of relief. Both Jacob Little and Dontae Woodard recorded one out apiece.

The four-game series concludes tomorrow with an early start time of 11:30 a.m.
