Texas State Softball Team Edges UTSA 4-3

SAN MARCOS, Texas – In a game that featured three ties and three lead changes, Tara Oltmann drove in the winning run with a single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Texas State softball team beat  I-35 rival UTSA, 4-3, in the first game of the 2020 Bobcat Classic Thursday night at Bobcat Softball Stadium.

Texas State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Christiana McDowell reached on an error, stole second, and scored on Hailey MacKay's single to left-center.

The Road Runners answered with a run in the third inning. Celeste Loughman drew a walk and advanced to third on Madison Washington's single to center field. She scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kindell Brooks.

The Bobcats regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Oltmann singled to left field, and stole second. Marisa Cruz came in to run for Oltmann and scored on an error by UTSA's first baseman.

UTSA answered in the fifth inning when Riley Grunberg hit a home run to centerfield off Meagan King. An inning later, King surrendered a second home run to Lauren Coerver in left field as the Roadrunners took their first lead in the game 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning.

Texas State came right back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning when ArieAnn Bell hit a home run in right-center to tie the score.

The Bobcats won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Bailee Carter led off with a single to left-center. McDowell laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to second base. After Sarah Vanderford reached on a fielder's choice to the third baseman, both she and Carter advanced a base on a wild pitch by Makenzie Carpenter. That error forced the Roadrunners to walk MacKay to load the bases, setting up Oltmann's game-winning hit.

The win improves Texas State's record to 3-2 this season, while UTSA falls to 4-3. The Bobcat Classic continues on Friday when Texas State plays Saint Louis at 5 p.m. The Billikens also play Wichita State at noon. UTSA and Wichita State play at 2:30 p.m.
