No. 13/12 Texas defeat the Bobcats in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas – Junior guard Mason Harrell scored a team-high 14 points, but Texas State fell at No. 13/12 Texas, 74-53 Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Bobcats (3-2) competed tough throughout the game, but mainly in the second half where they outscored the nationally-ranked Longhorns (5-1) through the first media timeout. However, the Texas State offense would struggle as they shot 36.1 percent from the floor (22-of-61) and a season-low 18.2 percent from 3-point range (2-of-11). Defensively, Texas State forced 14 turnovers and had 10 steals and six blocks, but only recorded four points off of those turnovers and had a season-high 16 turnovers of their own that the Horns turned into 23 points.

"I thought our guys competed," said interim head coach Terrence Johnson. "Like the Mississippi State, we talked about how this will come down to their [Texas] length and athleticism. We had trouble early on with their length. At times it got better, but we could not find the three-ball tonight. We tried to drive sometimes and made some things happen, but we did not get as many clean looks as we had hoped."

Harrell finished 5-of-14 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers, and had four rebounds and a steal. Senior guard Shelby Adams and forward Isiah Small had eight points each, with Adams leading the team with three steals and Small leading the team with six rebounds and two blocks.

Freshman forward Greg Brown had a game-high 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including three triples. He also led all players with three blocks. Junior guard Courtney Ramey finished with 11 points and six assists, and junior Andrew Jones rounded out the Longhorn top scorers with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

FIRST HALF
UT jumped out to a 12-3 lead, but Harrell led the Bobcats with a pair of 3-pointers, including one that cut the deficit to four points, 12-8 by the 12-minute media timeout. After a quick Texas basket, Adams scored on the up-and-under lay-up to keep it a four-point game, but the Longhorns answered with a 7-0 run that forced the Bobcats to call a timeout trailing 21-10 with 8:58 on the clock. Late in the half, Texas State pieced together a 6-0 run highlighted by Small's two-handed flush, cutting into the Longhorn lead 23-18. However, Texas closed the frame with a 10-2 edge that included the final six points of the half and led 33-20 at the intermission. Both teams were 2-of-9 from 3-point range, but the Bobcats shot 9-of-32 from the floor (28.1%), while Texas was 12-of-29 overall (41.4%) and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line (87.5%). Harrell led the Bobcats in scoring with six points followed by Adams and Small, who each had four points.

SECOND HALF
The Bobcats brought the energy early with a 6-0 run and later cut the lead to seven, 43-36, as they outscored the Longhorns 16-10 and forced the home team to burn a timeout at the 11:23 mark. Texas's Ramey knocked down a 3-pointer to bring the lead back to double-digits at 49-39, sparking an overall 19-8 run to hold a 65-47 advantage with 3:55 left to play to put the Bobcats away.
