SAN MARCOS, Texas– Texas State will travel roughly 40 minutes north to take on T-No. 13/No. 12 Texas at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. The game will be featured on The Longhorn Network.
The Bobcats (3-1) bounced back after the Mississippi State loss with a 72-64 victory over Incarnate Word at Strahan Arena. Texas State is averaging 74.0 points per game (ppg.) behind a 47.4 field goal percentage. Defensively, they rank No. 2 in the Sun Belt Conference with a 39.1 field goal percentage defense and No. 3 in scoring defense, giving up 63.5 ppg.
Junior guard Mason Harrell paces the team with 14.5 ppg., shooting 50.0 percent from the floor, 60.0 percent from behind-the-arc, and 88.9 percent from the charity stripe (No. 8 in the Sun Belt). Three other Bobcats follow, averaging nine points per contest, including senior guard Shelby Adams (9.8 ppg.), junior guard Caleb Asberry (9.3 ppg.), and junior forward Alonzo Sule (9.3 ppg.). Graduate guard Marlin Davis leads the team with 3.8 assists per game (apg.) and leads the Sun Belt Conference with a 7.5 assist-to-turnover ratio in addition to his 7.3 ppg. Senior forward Isiah Small leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game (rpg.) and contributes 6.3 ppg.
SCOUTING TEXAS
After winning their first four games, including three consecutive two-point wins over Davidson, Indiana, and North Carolina, The Longhorns (4-1) fell in their most recent home contest 68-64 against Villanova. Texas is averaging 73.6 ppg. behind a 46.0 percent field goal percentage. They are a stout defensive unit that ranks No. 2 in the Big 12 with a 62.0 scoring defense and No. 3 with a 37.5 field goal percentage defense.
The Longhorns are led by Preseason All-Big 12 selection, senior guard Matt Coleman III, who is averaging 16.4 ppg., 4.6 apg., and 1.2 steals per game (spg.). Coleman III is also shooting 50.8 percent from the floor, 40.7 percent from 3-point range, and 81.8 percent at the free-throw line. Junior guard Courtney Ramey follows with 15.4 ppg. and 3.20 apg. Ramey is shooting north of 40.0 percent from both the floor and from deep while turning in a team-high 88.9 free-throw percentage. Sophomore forward Kai Jones rounds out the Longhorns top scorers with 10.0 ppg and adds 5.0 rpg. Freshman forward Greg Brown leads the team with 6.8 rpg. To go along with his 8.2 ppg. Brown, Ramey, and senior forward Jericho Sims joined Coleman III in the Preseason All-Big 12 awards with the three being named Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Â
ALL-TIME SERIES
Texas leads Texas State in the all-time series 44-5 that dates back to 1917. The Longhorns have won the last 26 games against the Bobcats, including 22 straight at home. The last Bobcat win over the Horns was a 33-31 decision in Austin on Dec. 7, 1937. This is the first meeting between the programs since Dec. 13, 2014, when No. 8/9 Texas won 59-27 in Austin.
