No. 13 Texas State halts UTA’s win streak with straight-set victory

ARLINGTON, Texas No. 13 Texas State (15-1, 10-0 Sun Belt) snaps UT Arlington's (8-2, 8-2 Sun Belt) three-match winning streak with a straight-set performance (25-17, 25-18, 25-20) in what was its 10th sweep of the season Friday night at the College Park Center. With the win, the Bobcats increase their winning streak to 12.

The Bobcats dominated across the board beginning with their .342 hitting percentage, marking the sixth time this year the Cats have hit over .300. The team also matched a season-low 10 attacking errors (vs. ULM, Sept. 26). TXST held the edge over UTA in assists (45-30), aces (3-1), blocks (5-2), and digs (53-46).

"It was a great win and I thought we played a clean match," said head coach Sean Huiet. "We talked about being low error and putting pressure on them from the service line. We did both of those things well. Jill [Slaughter] stepped up big and played well as well as Kenedi [Rutherford] who continued her hot streak and led us in kills again. I am very of how this team is playing right now."

For the third time this year, junior outside hitter Kenedi Rutherford led the Bobcats with 11 kills (.310) while junior middle blocker Jillian Slaughter hit a season-high .476 with 10 kills on 21 errorless attacks. Junior setter Emily DeWalt turned in her 11th double-double this season (No. 43 of career) with 37 kills and 11 digs. She also finished with five kills, an ace, and a block. Senior middle Tyeranee Scott led the team with four blocks and added six kills on the night (.417, 6-1-12), while junior libero Kayla Granado led the Bobcats with 12 digs and handed out five helpers.

The Lady Mavs was held to a .158 hitting percentage with no player registering 10 kills. Junior outside hitter Brooke Townsend (.231) and freshman outside hitter Brianna Ford each had nine kills. Ford also had the team's only ace and had a solo block. Junior setter Kylee Kapp led the team with 14 assists and freshman setter Mollie Blank followed with 12 assists. Sophomore defensive specialist Alli Wells had a match-high 14 digs and freshman defensive specialist Alyssa Duran finished with 12 digs.

Texas State now leads the all-time series vs. UT Arlington 42-41 and evens the count 17-17 when playing in Arlington.

Set 1
Texas State built an 8-4 lead behind a 3-0 run and went into the media timeout with a 15-11 advantage. After the break, the Bobcats scored the next three points to force UTA to use its first timeout of the match at 18-11. The Bobcats later opened up a nine-point lead at 22-13 following back-to-back kills from Rutherford and the Bobcats cruised from there to 25-17 victory. Texas State hit .319 in the frame and was led by Teske's seven kills and Rutherford's six.

Set 2
The second set featured eight ties but just two lead changes. The Lady Mavs grabbed its first lead at 8-7 thanks to a 4-1 scoring run, but their lead was quickly erased after consecutive attacking errors. The Bobcats held the lead from there and created separation with five unanswered points (20-14) and burned through UT Arlington's two timeouts. The Lady Mavs put a few points together, but the Bobcats scored on three of the final four points to win the set 25-18. Slaughter dominated the stanza with five kills on eight attempts (.625) and had one block.

Set 3
The Lady Mavericks opened the stanza with a 4-1 lead, but the Bobcats ripped off five consecutive points for a 6-4 lead and made UTA burn an early timeout in the process. The visiting team used another 4-1 run to go ahead 9-5 and although UTA fought back and pulled within one point at 11-10, kills from Buettner and Rutherford pressured the Lady Mavs to use their final timeout with the count at 13-10. TXST led by as many as seven points at 23-16, but the home team gave one final push with a 4-0 run before a kill from Scott and an UTA attack error ended the set, 25-20 Bobcats.
