No. 13 Texas State downs UT Arlington in weekend series

ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 13 Texas State (16-1, 11-0 Sun Belt) ends the weekend with a sweep over UT Arlington (8-3, 8-3 Sun Belt) to improve its winning streak to 13 on Saturday afternoon at the College Park Center.

The Bobcats hit .248 in the match and held the Lady Mavs to a .092 clip in the sweep. The Cats also had 10 blocks in the match, including eight solo blocks, a new season-high. The 10 blocks mark the fifth time this year the team has registered 10 or more blocks and the second time in three matches.

"It was a great win and weekend," said head coach Sean Huiet, "UTA is very young but a great team, so to come in and sweep them twice at their place is big. It is a good momentum builder for us as we prepare for the end of the season push. I thought our middles did a great job this weekend. Both Jill [Slaughter] and T [Tyeranee Scott] are hitting for high efficiencies and doing a great job blocking."

Senior middle blocker Tyeranee Scott logged a match-high 13 kills behind a .522 hitting percentage (13-1-23). It is the fourth time in six matches that Scott has reached double figures in kills and she also added two solo blocks. Junior outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald put down 11 kills (.333) and matched a career-high six blocks, including a career-best four solo blocks. Junior setter Emily DeWalt finished with 35 assists, eight digs, and three kills, while senior setter Brooke Johnson led the team with two aces and 10 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Michelle Foster also recorded double-digit digs with a career-high of 10.

Junior outside hitter Brooke Townsend led the Lady Mavericks with nine kills and also added nine digs. Freshman outside hitter Brianna Ford followed with eight kills. Freshman setter Mollie Blank directed the offense with 16 assists and had the team's only ace of the match, and junior setter Kylee Kapp finished with 13 assists, five digs, and a kill. Freshman outside hitter Briana Brown led the team with two solo blocks, and sophomore defensive specialist Alli Wells dug a match-high 12 balls. Freshman defensive specialist Alyssa Duran also totaled 11 digs in the loss.

Set 1
It was a back-and-forth set early on that featured nine ties and five lead changes. With the Bobcats down 10-12, Fitzgerald sparked a 5-1 run with four consecutive kills and one from sophomore outside hitter Lauren Teske to grab a 15-13 lead heading into the media timeout. After two quick points from Texas State to expand its run to 7-1, UTA used its first timeout of the set. That was the separation needed to sealed the win as TXST took the opening frame 25-19. The Bobcats hit .326 in the set, led by Fitzgerald's eight kills and DeWalt's 17 assists.

Set 2
The Lady Mavs scored the first thee points of the set, but the Bobcats stormed back and took a 6-4 lead to force a UTA timeout after a big kill from junior middle blocker Jillian Slaughter. Soon after the timeout, UTA used a 3-0 run to regain the lead, but TXST blew the set open with a massive 10-1 run to bring the count to 17-9. The Maroon and Gold went on to win the set 25-14 with Scott dominating the way with five kills on seven errorless attacks (.714) and one solo block. The Bobcat defense also held the Lady Mavs to a .000 attacking percentage, their lowest of the match.

Set 3
Although the Lady Mavs scored first again, it was all Bobcats in the third set in large part due to an 8-0 run the put the Bobcats ahead 17-6. Despite being down 20-12, UT Arlington rallied back by cutting into the lead 23-20 thanks to a 5-0 burst, but the Bobcats won the set 25-21 after Slaughter's sixth kill of the day and a Lady Mavs' service error.
