DeWalt continues to climb career assist ladder as Bobcats knock off Trojans

SAN MARCOS, Texas — It was just Emily DeWalt's night as the Texas State volleyball team made it 10 straight wins when the Bobcats handed Little Rock its second defeat in less than eight hours when TXST won 27-25, 25-20, 21-25, 28-26 on Friday night.

"I thought we did enough to win," said Bobcat volleyball head coach Sean Huiet. "We knew Little Rock was going to do some things that were going to challenge us. They were very consistent today. They don't care who they are competing against; they're going to play hard and not be knocked off their rocker and it made us go to another level today."

Going to another level is exactly what DeWalt did as the junior setter was credited with a game-high 64 assists, which not only set a career high for the Helotes, Texas native but also set the top assist mark for a four-set match across the Division I level. DeWalt's 64 assisted tied TCU's McKenzie Nichols and Louisiana's Avery Breaux for the second-most in a match this season. Only Chattanooga's Sophia Bossong had more with 67.

Additionally, DeWalt moved into fifth on the Texas State all-time career assist leaderboard following her performance Friday evening. The junior now sits at 3,039 career assists (1,270; 1,196; 573) and is now 1,244 behind Natalie Spann (1998-01) for fourth on the list.

"Yeah, that's really awesome," Hueit said on DeWalt's accomplishments. "She's a special player and is very special to Texas State, so for her to move up that list … she'll be the first one to say that's nothing to her, because she just wants the team to succeed and have a great season."

Hours after Rutherford set a career high with 15 kills, Tyeranee Scott accomplished the same thing as the middle blocker out of Houston, Texas by way of Jersey Village High School was credited with 17 kills. Jillian Slaughter (11 kills in 20 attempts) and Janell Fitzgerald (23-37) also joined Scott with double-digit kills in the night gap.

During the first set, neither team got further out than five points — when Texas State led 12-7 — while there were also 11 ties. However, no moment was more important than when Scott, Lauren Teske and Rutherford went on a three-point scoring run to take the set after trailing 25-24.

The second set was slightly more relaxing as the Bobcats (13-1, 8-0) hurried out to a 13-4 advantage on the scoreboard, before making it 17-10 following a Fitzgerald kill off a DeWalt set. Little Rock (1-10, 1-9) attempted a comeback and got to within three at 19-16 and then again at 23-20, but Rutherford and an attack error allowed the Bobcats to go up 2-0 in the match.

Little Rock flipped the tables in the third set as the Trojans raced out to a 4-1 lead, before extending it to 14-6 just minutes later. Texas State didn't back down, though, as the Bobcats went on their own scoring run and got to within three at 17-15 and then eventually 20-18. But it was Little Rock who got to 25 first when Laura Jansen converted a kill attempt.

Texas State found its rhythm, again, as the Bobcats ran out to a 6-2 lead in the opening stages of the fourth set, before extended their lead to 10-4. However, Little Rock fought back to ultimately tie the set at 14-14, then each team traded points before TXST went up 19-17 following a Trojan attack error. Minutes later, Fitzgerald pushed Texas State ahead 22-19, then 23-21 following an attack error by Little Rock.

Facing set point at 26-25, Texas State reeled off three straight points courtesy of kills by Slaughter, Fitzgerald and Rutherford to push the Bobcats back ahead and seal the victory.

The two teams wrap up a two-day, three-match conference slate on Saturday, Oct. 24 with the first served scheduled for 1 p.m.
