Bobcats Play Fourth Straight Road Game at South Alabama

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Texas State football team (1-4, 1-1 in the Sun Belt) will look for a better outcome in its second trip to Alabama in as many weeks when the Bobcats square off against South Alabama (1-2) in Mobile on Saturday, Oct. 17.  The game kicks off at 11 a.m. (CT) and can be seen on ESPNU and heard on KTSW (89.9 FM in San Marcos) or the TuneIn App.

LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS
  • Following London Harris' blocked kick against Troy last Saturday, the Bobcats are one of 10 FBS teams to have blocked multiple kicks this season. Texas State had its first blocked kick at Boston College when Jarron Morris blocked a field goal attempt.

Miami-Fla., Kansas State, Florida State, and Western Kentucky lead the nation with three blocked kicks this season.  The other teams with two blocked kicks are Texas Tech, Army, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, and Oklahoma.

  • After rushing for 161 yards against Troy last weekend, Texas State has outrushed its opponent in three straight games this season. It marks the first time the Bobcats have accomplished that feat since they outrushed their first three opponents in 2017.

  • Sophomore quarterback Brady McBride has thrown at least one touchdown pass in each of the three games he has started after throwing a touchdown pass to tight end Blake Aragon at Troy.

  • Troy missed three field-goal attempts to become Texas State's first opponent in the last 10 years to miss three field-goal tries in a single game.

  • Junior quarterback Tyler Vitt enters Saturday's game at South Alabama ranked 24th in the FBS — and third in the Sun Belt Conference — with six touchdown passes. Brady McBride is 36th across the FBS level — and seventh in the conference — with five.

  • Marcell Barbee ranks seventh in FBS and second in the conference with four touchdown receptions, with Jeremiah Haydel sitting 16th at the DI level and third in the SBC with three TD catches.

SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
  • South Alabama enters Saturday's game with a 1-2 overall record. The Jaguars opened the season with a 32-21 win at Southern Mississippi on Sept. 3, before dropping back-to-back home games against Tulane (27-24) on Sept. 12 and UAB (42-10) on Sept. 24.

  • Saturday's game against Texas State is the Sun Belt Conference opener for South Alabama. It is the first of eight consecutive conference games for the Jaguars.

  • South Alabama enters Saturday's game against Texas State outscoring its opponents 90-66 total points and an average of 8.0 points per game (30.0-to-22.0).

  • The Jaguars enters Saturday's game having been outscored 36-9 by their first three opponents. South Alabama has outscored their opponents, 44-40, during the second and third quarters combined.
  • Carlos Davis leads South Alabama with 272 rushing yards and a touchdown on only 48 attempts to average 5.7 yards per rush. His rushing total is nearly seven times as many as the next closest Jaguar as Desmond Trotter has 45 yards on 13 attempts.

  • Like Texas State, South Alabama has been using a two-quarterback system with Chance Lovertich (34-61-1; 479), and Desmond Trotter (20-35-2; 373) combining to complete 54-of-96 passes for 852 yards and six touchdowns this season.

  • Kawaan Baker leads the Jaguars with 16 receptions, while Jalen Tolbert has accumulated team-highs of 327 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 15 catches.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Saturday's meeting between the two teams will be the sixth all-time meeting between Texas State and South Alabama, with Texas State holding a 3-2 edge after knocking off the Jaguars, 30-28, in San Marcos last season.

  • The Bobcats are looking for their first victory in Mobile after falling 41-31 on Sept. 15, 2018, and 24-20 on Nov. 15, 2014.

  • The series began on Oct. 26, 2013, when the Bobcats won a 33-31 decision in San Marcos.
