CONWAY, S.C. – In its first road Sun Belt Conference game of the season, Texas State (7-7, 0-3 SBC) led by 10 points early in the third quarter against Coastal Carolina, but fell 75-67 at the HTC Center in Conway on Thursday night. The Chanticleers (12-2, 2-1 SBC) were held to a season-low five points in the second quarter but posted 52 points in the second half.
Senior guard Brooke Holle scored 13 points and connected on a trio of three-point field goals to move into a tie for 10th place alongside Raven Burns (2012-16) in the school record book with her 117th career triple. Sophomore forward Da'Nasia Hood collected a career-best 23 points with 17 coming in the second half, and sophomore point guard Kennedy Taylor recorded 10 assists to tie her career-high.
The Bobcats led at the half 26-23 and came back from a nine-point first quarter deficit. Texas State went on a sizeable 14-3 run in the second quarter and took its first lead of 21-19 at the 5:26 mark. The stingy TXST defense played its best in the second quarter and outscored CCU, 17-5.
TXST scored 12 unanswered points at the end of the second quarter and into the third to claim its largest lead of 33-23 at the 8:47 mark of the third period. Both squads were lights out from the floor in the stanza and each shot above 60% from the field while combining to score 52 points. CCU won the quarter 28-24 and took a 51-50 lead into the fourth period.
Coastal Carolina outscored Texas State 24-17 in the final quarter to earn its second conference win of the year. Senior Chanticleer guard DJ Williams scored 29 points off the bench on 10-for-19 shooting to lead all scorers. Coastal Carolina had an advantage in second chance points (18-6) and bench points (45-19) while Texas State led in points off turnovers (16-10) and points in the paint (34-32).
Sophomore guard Ja'Kayla Bowie provided quality minutes off the bench for Texas State and scored six points with a season-high five boards in 15 minutes of action.
