Texas State Drops Heartbreaker in Overtime at Appalachian State, 73-65

BOONE, N.C. – Texas State (7-8, 0-4 SBC) led Appalachian State (4-11, 1-3 SBC) by 14 points at halftime and 10 points after the third quarter, but could not survive a late surge by the hosts and fell in overtime, 73-65, at the Holmes Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats moved to 1-1 in overtime games this year and were outscored 16-8 in the period.

Free throws proved to be huge for App State down the stretch as they shot 23 free throws compared to Texas State's 11. The Mountaineers outscored Texas State 22-12 in the fourth period as Texas State struggled from the field (2-for-10).

Sophomore forward Da'Nasia Hood led Texas State with 18 points shared the team lead in rebounds alongside junior guard Avionne Alexander (7). Sophomore guard Kennedy Taylor stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.

The Bobcats raced out to a 22-10 lead after the first quarter and utilized a 15-0 run over 3:39 during the stanza. TXST was firing on all cylinders in the quarter and shot 64% (9-for-14) from the field and nailed a pair of treys. In a low scoring second quarter, the Bobcat defense did not allow an App State basket for over the first five minutes, but endured a five minute scoreless drought of their own. Texas State claimed a 32-18 lead at the break and shot 50% from the field (13-for-26).

Appalachian State chipped away at its deficit and won the third period, 17-13. The Mountaineers offense racked up 22 fourth quarter points and hit eight field goals with five free throws.

Texas State trailed 50-49 with 3:32 left in regulation when senior guard Bailey Holle swished a three from the wing to push the Bobcats up, 52-50. After two made App State free throws, she again hit another trey to give TXST a three-point lead. App State went on a 5-0 spurt to take a two-point lead, 57-55. With only five seconds remaining Taylor drove to the bucket, got fouled and sunk two clutch free throws to send the game to overtime.

Sprung by a pair of triples, App State scored 10 unanswered points to control the overtime stanza and earn the win.

Texas State shot 49% through the first three quarter, but struggled to a tune of 26% (5-for-19) the last 15 minutes. TXST hoisted a season-high 25 three-point attempts and connected on nine (26%).

Bailey Holle tied her season-high with three trifectas and also dished out four assists. Hood drilled four threes to tie her season-high and was 7-for-16 from the floor.   

Appalachian State's Pre Stanley dropped 25 points to lead all scorers. The Mountaineers now lead the all-time series 6-5 and won the last three.
