Late South Alabama Run Sinks Bobcats, 78-76

MOBILE, Ala. – The homestanding South Alabama Jaguars (10-10, 5-3 SBC) poured in 32 points in the fourth quarter to erase a 23-point deficit and defeated Texas State (7-12, 0-8 SBC) in double overtime, 78-76, at the Mitchell Center on Saturday evening.

The Bobcats took their largest lead of 23 points with 8:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. USA started to plug away and implemented a full court defensive look that made Texas State lose its offensive rhythm. South Alabama hit 11-of-22 of its fourth quarter field goals and went 8-for-15 at the foul line. Down six with 14 seconds left, South Alabama's Savannah Jones connected on a four-point play and Texas State's Da'Nasia Hood split two free throws to make it, 67-64. Jones drilled the game-tying three with four seconds left to send the game to overtime.

USA scored the first five points of overtime, but TXST responded to tie the game and had the ball with 10 seconds remaining. The Bobcats had three shot attempts to win the game after two offensive boards, but came up short. TXST had a chance to tie the game in double overtime, but couldn't capitalize and fell short on two shots.

Texas State played well through three quarters and hit 61% (8-for-13) of its shots in the second quarter. The Bobcats led by 16 points at halftime.

Jones led all scorers with 24 points and made six treys. The Bobcats placed four in double figures and were paced by sophomore Da'Nasia Hood's 17 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Avionne Alexander scored a career-best 16 points. Sophomore Kennedy Taylor added 16 points and dished out nine assists. Senior Brooke Holle made a pair of three and dropped 14 points.

Texas State had a 26-15 advantage in points off turnovers and forced USA into 20 giveaways. The Bobcats still leads the series against the Jaguars, 10-3, but fell in Mobile for the first time. The Bobcats are now 1-2 in overtime games and played their first double overtime affair since an 83-81 defeat to Louisiana in 2015.
