ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas State softball team (28-22, 16-9 Sun Belt) could not rekindle the magic from a night ago and fell 4-1 against the UT Arlington Mavericks (28-24, 16-10 Sun Belt) on Friday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
KEY MOMENTS
- Texas State manufactured the only Bobcat run of the game in the top of the first inning. Senior outfielder
Mari Cranek and sophomore infielder
Tara Oltmann both reached base with sharply hit singles up the middle. Cranek darted home on a double steal play to take the early 1-0 lead.
- UT Arlington wasted little time finding the tying run. As was the case in game one of the series, UTA scored the run with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior infielder Aileen Garcia knocked in the equalizer with a single into right field.
- The Mavs turned to small ball to take the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Senior outfielder Krista Rude reached base on a bunt single, advanced to second on a steal, and took third on a sacrifice bunt. She slid home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Garcia to make the score 2-1.
- Junior infielder Whitney Walton led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to left field before junior catcher Reagan Wright lifted a sacrifice fly into left to give the Mavs a 4-1 lead through five innings.
- Texas State put two runners on in the top of the seventh inning and looked to shock the Mavericks with a seventh-inning rally for the second-straight evening. Unfortunately, the game ended on a line-drive double play.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Junior pitcher
Dalilah Barrera (9-5) took the loss for the Bobcats in a starting role. She pitched 4.0+ innings and allowed the first three Maverick runs to plate. She struck out a pair with one walk.
- Junior infielder
Bailee Carter reached base twice in the game to pace the TXST offense. She collected one of the four Texas State hits and drew one walk.
- The offense struggled with runners on base as the unit combined to hit 1-for-10 (.100) in those situations. TXST went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. UT Arlington hit 3-for-9 (.333) with runners on throughout the game.
