SAN MARCOS, Texas – The NCAA announced Wednesday that the Texas State women's golf and tennis teams have been recognized for academic excellence after scoring in the top 10 percent of their sports in the recent Academic Progress Rates (APR).
This marks the 11th consecutive year that the Texas State women's tennis program has been publicly recognized by the NCAA. It is the seventh straight year for the Bobcat women's golf team to be acknowledged.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The NCAA is publicly recognizing more than 1,300 program from 312 schools for their academic performance.
The result of an increase in perfect scores, teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,328, up 44 from the previous academic year. APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 987 to 1,000.
Of the teams publicly recognized, 857 teams competed in women's sports and 471 participated in men's or co-ed sports. Texas State's two teams were among the 1,214 teams that have earned a perfect APR score of 1,000.
"Congratulations to the programs earning Public Recognition Awards for their commitment to academic success," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "The number of perfect scores this year is an indication that schools and student-athletes are setting high bars for achievement, and we are proud that they are continuing to succeed academically as well as athletically."
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each academic semester or academic term to provide a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
The most recent APR scores are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years. APR scores for all NCAA Division I teams will be released on May 8. Each team must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
