SAN MARCOS, Texas – It was a day of celebration for the Texas State women's tennis team when the Bobcats defeated Arkansas State 4-0 on the Bobcat Indoor Tennis Courts Saturday. Following the match, Texas State honored three victorious senior members of the team,
Ana Perez,
Julia Navajo-Melendez, and
Joy Chia Ming Ming.
Perez and Chia Ming Ming won their matches in straight sets, while Navajo-Melendez was victorious in the most compelling match of the day.
Rishona Israel-Lewis also came back to win her match in three sets for the fourth win in the contest.
Perez earned Texas State's first point in the match with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Pompawee Pramethong in the No. 1 match.
Israel-Lewis gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead with her victory over Shelby King in the No. 2 match. After dropping the first set by a score of 6-2, Israel-Lewis came back to win the second set, 6-4, before capturing the third set by a score of 6-3.
The most gripping match of the day came in the No. 3 match after Navajo-Melendez and Anita Detlava split the first two sets. Navajo-Melendez won the first set by a score of 6-3, and Detlava won the second set, 6-4.
In the final set, Detlava jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and was ahead 40-15 in the fourth game before Navajo-Melendez fought back to win that game and win the following two games to tie the score at 3-3. Detlava bounced back to win the next two games to take another 5-3 advantage before Navajo-Melendez won the final four games to capture the third set and win the match, 7-5.
Chia Ming Ming clinched the victory when she won her No. 4 match against Berta Masdevall Masip in straight sets. She won the first set by a 6-3 score. In the second set, Chia Ming Ming trailed 5-3 before she came back to win four straight games to capture the set, 7-5, to win the set.
The victory improves Texas State's record to 6-10 overall, 2-5 in Sun Belt Conference matches. Arkansas State drops to 3-11 overall and 0-7 in the Sun Belt.
