SAN MARCOS – The Texas State softball team (25-20) fell victim to a comeback effort against the Houston Cougars (32-15) on Tuesday evening at Bobcat Softball Stadium. The Bobcats held a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning but could not hold on for the win. UH stormed back to win 4-3.
KEY MOMENTS
- Senior outfielder
Mari Cranek ripped a double into centerfield with one out in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore
Tara Oltmann delivered a single back through the middle to score Cranek easily from second base.
- Texas State doubled the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. Junior infielder
Bailee Carter scored on an RBI groundout from junior outfielder
Christiana McDowell after reaching to leadoff the frame on an error.
- Junior infielder
Hailey MacKay enter her name in the RBI column of the scoresheet with a third-inning infield single to shortstop. The hit scored the runner from third base to give TXST a 3-0 advantage.
- Houston found the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when senior catcher Brooke Vannoy singled home a run with one out.
- The Cougars would go on to plate the winning runs in the top of the seventh inning. All three runs scored in the frame were unearned as the first batter of the seventh reached via a throwing error. Junior infielder Arielle James delivered the decisive hit with a two-run double down the left field line.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Sophomore pitcher
Meagan King (16-10) took the hard-fought loss after pitching a complete game. She allowed nine hits and four runs (one earned) to plate with no walks. King struck out a pair of Cougar bats.
- Houston out-hit Texas State by a count of 9-6. Texas State stranded eight runners as the Bobcats accrued four walks in the ballgame.
- Cranek led the Bobcat offense with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. She collected a double in the bottom of the first and a single in the bottom of the seventh. Cranek tallied one run scored.
- Sophomore infielder
ArieAnn Bell found herself on base three times in the game, once by way of a hit and two walks.
NOTABLES
- The game marked the first of four teal games for the Texas State Bobcat softball team. The squad donned jerseys with teal accents to help promote ovarian cancer research awareness. TXST will wear teal for a pair of games against Troy.
- Oltmann continued to deliver with runners on base. Her first inning RBI gave her 36 on the season to pace the Bobcat offense.
- Bell ran her on-base streak to 20 games. During the stretch she has recorded a batting average of 3.48 (16-for-46) with 19 walks drawn, three doubles, three home runs, and 11 RBI.
- Texas State entered the contest as winners of all 18 games in which the team carried a lead after the sixth inning this season. The last Bobcat loss when leading after the sixth inning came in an eight-inning affair at Troy on April 28, 2018.

- The Bobcats continue the Teal Week with Troy in a three-game weekend series starting at 6 p.m. on April 26 at Bobcat Softball Stadium. The softball program continues to raise awareness for ovarian cancer research as former Texas State great
Randi Rupp has donated an autographed, game-worn Cleveland Comets jersey to the program for silent auction. Bids will be accepted until the fifth inning of the game on April 27.
