SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the second straight game at Bobcat Ballpark, the Texas State baseball team (28-13) won on a walk-off with Tuesday's hero being
Skyler Valentine to defeat Texas (24-19) 7-6 in front of a facility record crowd of 3,119. The victory gives TXST a season-long seven game winning streak and its first win over the Longhorns since 2017 to snap a five-game skid.
Â
Â
The Longhorns opened the scoring their first time at the plate when Masen Hibbeler singled back up the middle. The Bobcats quickly answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame when a
John Wuthrich groundout plated
Jaylen Hubbard.
Â
In the bottom of the third, TXST nearly took the lead twice. Wuthrich sent an opposite field shot to left field but Eric Kennedy made a leaping snag at the wall to rob him of a home run.
Travon Benton followed with a shot to right field that saw Austin Todd make a leaping grab to make it back-to-back TXST homers robbed.
Â
With two outs in the fifth,
Will Hollis sent a 3-1 offering to left field. Kennedy leapt and nearly came up with his second home run stealing snatch of the game but just missed to give the Bobcats the lead. Two pitches later, Wuthrich blasted an offering to right field and would not be denied as he hit his fifth home run of the season to give Texas State a 3-1 advantage.
Â
UT got back on the scoreboard in the seventh. Hibbeler recorded his second RBI single of the game to cut the visitor's deficit to one. Ryan Reynolds would follow by smashing a 2-1 offering down the right field line for a grand slam to put the Longhorns on top 6-3.
Â
Down to the final two outs,
Jaxon Williams ripped a 2-2 offering down the right field line just past the third baseman for a double. Hollis then blasted a pitch into the left field for his second home run of the game and fifth of the season to make it a one-run contest.
Â
Wuthrich singled to left field to force a UT pitching change. It did not pay off for the Longhorns as Benton sent a hot shot back up the middle for a single.
Dalton Shuffield hit chopper to the shortstop, who decided to go to third for the force out. However, the throw was way off the mark to load the bases. On a 1-1 pitch, Valentine laced a single to left field that scored Wuthrich and Benton for the walk-off win.
Â
Picking up the win on the mound was
Zachary Leigh (3-1) after he pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout. Tristian Stevens (2-2) took the loss after giving up the game-winning run on two hits and failing to record an out against the three batters he faced.
Â
Garrett Herrmann got the start and went 4.0 innings. The junior right-hander struck out five while giving up five hits, two walks and one run. Both
Brandon Lewis and
Brayden Theriot tossed 1.2 scoreless inning and struck out two apiece. Also seeing action on the mound was
Kyle Bradford,
Brent Hebert and
Anthony Pagano.
Â
Both Hollis and Wuthirch finished with two hits and two runs scored apiece. Hollis finished with three RBIs and both Valentine and Wuthirch plated two each.
Ryan Newman went 1-for-2 with two walks and one double.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a Sun Belt Conference series this weekend at Louisiana. Friday's series opening game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
