SAN ANTONIO – On a cold, windy afternoon, the Texas State baseball team went into Roadrunner Field and defeated I-35 rival UTSA 8-3 on Tuesday.
Â
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 8-4 overall while the Roadrunners fall to 7-6.
Â
Earning the victory, the first of his career, was
Garrett Herrmann (1-0). The junior right-hander went 5.0 innings and striking out four while giving up three runs on three hits and three walks. Suffering the defeat was
Shane Daughety (1-1) as he gave up two runs on four walks and one hit.
Â
Reece Gould made his collegiate debut and tossed 3.0 scoreless innings.
Kyle Bradford pitched a perfect ninth inning. He recorded one strikeout that came on the final batter of the contest.
Â
At the plate,
Will Hollis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a stolen base and scored once. Also driving in two runs was
Ryan Newman despite not recording a base hit.
Skyler Valentine was the lone Bobcat to score multiple times, doing it twice.
Â
The second inning began with Valentine reaching base as the UTSA third baseman misfielded a hot shot. A four-pitch walk allowed
Cole Coffey to reach base and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.
Â
Newman ripped the ball to right center field that was caught and plated a run as both runners advanced a base. A second run in the frame was scored when
Chase Evans grounded out to the second baseman on a ball hit back up the middle.
Â
With two outs in the third,
Jaylen Hubbard was hit on his back foot. A 3-1 offering was then sent over the first baseman for a single by Hollis and Valentine drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Coffey was able to induce his second free pass of the game to bring home a run and increase the lead to 3-0.
Â
The Roadrunners would score twice when Dylan Rock his a double off the left field wall with the bases loaded. A ground out by Bryan Arias scored another run to tie the game 3-3 at the conclusion of the third.
Â
Back-to-back walks in the fifth forced another UTSA pitching change.
Connor Anderson came on as a pinch hitter and doubled down the left field line for his first hit as a Bobcat that also brought home a run.
Â
Newman then hit a grounder to the second baseman, who was playing in and when home with the throw. Valentine was able to slide in under the tag to put TXST back ahead 5-3 after the top of the fifth.
Â
Colton Moore led off the sixth by reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman. A single to center by
Dalton Shuffield and a walk to
Jaxon Williams loaded the bases. Following a pitching change, Hollis singled through the right side as the ball deflected off the first baseman to bring home two runs.
Â
The final run of the game came on a wild pitch that allowed Williams to easily score from third and increase the lead to 8-3.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting with Incarnate Word on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark.
