Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Team effort propels Texas State past Arkansas State, 68-54

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team (10-14, 5-7 Sun Belt) defeated the Arkansas State Red Wolves (9-14, 4-8 Sun Belt) by a score of 68-54 behind four players in double figures on Thursday night at Strahan Arena.

The victory snapped a season-worst five-game skid and gave the Bobcats a home victory for the first time since topping Coastal Carolina on Jan. 10.

"This was a total team effort tonight," head coach Zenarae Antoine said. "I am proud of this team because they have persevered through a really tough stretch in the last handful of games. To have four players in double figures, to outrebound this team and to hold the conference's third-highest scoring team to 54 points really took a tremendous effort from this group."

Junior guard Brooke Holle poured in a game-high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor and 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point line. The game marked the second 20-point outing of the season for Holle and the sixth of her career.

Freshman forward Da'Nasia Hood tallied 14 points and a career-best nine rebounds. She collected four offensive boards, added a pair of steals and blocked two shots. Senior guard Toshua Leavitt added 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor.

Sophomore forward Jayla Johnson paced the Bobcat bench, a unit that outscored A-St 21-12, with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting and five rebounds. Freshman center Jaeda Reed played big minutes off the bench and scored a career-best seven points and cleared five rebounds.

The Red Wolves had one double-digit scorer in sophomore forward Peyton Martin. She scored 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting and added five boards.

Both offenses struggled to find a rhythm in the early stages of the ballgame as Arkansas State led 7-2 with 6:10 remaining in the opening quarter. Texas State rattled off a 7-1 run to take a 9-8 lead with 2:49 on the first-quarter clock. Reed provided the biggest highlight of the run, an old-fashion three-point play off a perfectly executed high-low pass from Hood. Reed capped off the first frame with an offensive rebound and second-chance bucket as time expired to give the Cats a 15-10 lead.

The two teams went back-and-forth in the second quarter, but the Bobcats never relinquished the lead and went into the locker room with a 28-26 lead at intermission.

Texas State spurted ahead in the middle of the third quarter on a quick 7-0 run. Hood sparked the run with an offensive rebound and bucket and a pick-and-pop triple off an assist from freshman guard Kennedy Taylor, who ended the game with a career-high 10 helpers. Leavitt concluded the run with a jumper to give the Bobcats a 39-29 lead with 5:10 remaining in the third. The lead would balloon to 15 by quarter's end.

Arkansas State tried to scrap back into the game but were never able to make a serious push. Texas State was able to keep the visitors at arm's length over the final 10 minutes of play, never letting the Red Wolves pull closer than 10 before the game ended at the final count of 68-54.

Up next, Texas State will be back in action against Little Rock at 2 p.m. on Feb. 16 inside Strahan Arena. The game will be TXST's Play4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness game and will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Brant Freeman and Suzanne Fox on the call.
