SAN MARCOS, Texas – It was a challenging day for the Texas State women's tennis team when the Bobcats suffered a 4-3 loss in their home opener against Presbyterian College on Friday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Texas State seemed to have things in control early in the match when
Rishona Israel-Lewis and
Josefina Cassara combined for a 6-2 doubles victory over Tracy Johnson and Samantha Calais on the No. 2 court.
Even though Presbyterian College tied the team score at 1-1 after
Joy Chia Ming Ming and
Andrea Fuchs suffered a 6-3 loss in the No. 3 match, the Bobcats still held a 5-4 lead in the top-seeded doubles match.
However, Sydney Patton and Jessica Leeman came from behind to beat
Ana Perez and
Julia Navajo-Melendez, 7-5, on the No. 1 court, giving the doubles point to Presbyterian College.
The Bobcats mounted their own comeback by winning three of first four decisions in singles play. First, Navajo-Melendez tied the team score at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Calais on the No. 3 court.
However, Presbyterian regained a 2-1 advantage when Chia Ming Ming fell 6-3, 6-4 against Leeman on the No. 5 court. Texas State took its final lead of the day when the Bobcats captured victories in the top two seeded match.
After trailing 3-0 early in the first set,
Ana Perez captured six of the next seven points to win the first set against Patton in the top-seeded match. Then, Perez triumphed in the second set, 6-2, for the victory and tied the team score at 2-2. Israel-Lewis gave the Bobcats a short-lived 3-2 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Johnson in the Not. 2 match.
But, Presbyterian won the final two matches to clinch the victory. Fuchs dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Katie Thompson on the No. 6 court, and Cassara fell 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 4 match.
The loss drops Texas State's season record to 2-2 with both losses being hard-fought 4-3 encounters. The Bobcats return to action Sunday morning at 10 a.m. when Texas State hosts Prairie View A&M at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
