SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision against Northwestern State in a match that was played inside the Bobcats Indoor Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon.
Texas State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when the Bobcats began the day winning the top two seeded singles matches.
Ana Perez knocked off No. 114-ranked Maria Skybia in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 in the top-seeded match.
Rishona Israel-Lewis posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Polina Mutel in the No. 2 match.
Northwestern State came back to win the next three matches. First,
Julia Navajo-Melendez dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Rhea Verma in the No. 3-seeded match. In the No. 4 match,
Josefina Cassara fell 6-1, 6-3 against Patrycja Polanska in the No. 4 match. In the No. 5-seeded match,
Joy Chia Ming Ming fell 6-0, 6-3 against Ela Iwaniuk.
The Bobcats appeared they might have a chance to tie the score at 3-3 when
Andrea Fuchs won the first set in the No. 6 match by a score of 7-5. However, Judit Castillo came back to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-0 to seal the victory for the Lady Demons.
One doubles match was completed as Skybia and Mutel won a 6-2 decision over Perez and Navajo-Melendez. Israel-Lewis and Cassara won the first game in their match against Verma and Polanska before their match was suspended.
The Bobcats suffered their third straight loss and fall to 2-3 this season, while Northwestern State improved its record to 4-1. Texas State returns to action on Feb. 16 against McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 17.
