Bobcats Fall in Tightly Contested Battle at Oral Roberts, 63-57

TULSA, Okla. – The Texas State women's basketball team (1-1) fell in its first road game of the 2019-20 season at Oral Roberts (2-0) 63-57 at the Mabee Center in Tulsa on Friday evening. The Bobcats came as close as two points in the fourth quarter but could not get over the hump in a physical contest that featured 11 lead changes and six ties. An attacking defense kept the Bobcats in the game and forced the Golden Eagles into 26 turnovers, their most in the last two seasons.

TXST outscored Oral Roberts after the first quarter, 15-10, and led by as many as seven points in the stanza. Sophomore forward Da'Nasia Hood scored 11 of her 17 points and drilled three triples in the opening period. Texas State's defense limited Oral Roberts to 26% (4-of-15) from the field and 28% (2-of-7) from behind the arc.

The Bobcats took a seven-point lead with four minutes remaining in the second on a transition layup by junior forward Jayla Johnson that was created by a Hood steal. ORU answered connecting on back-to-back triples to cut the TXST lead to one. Sophomore center Jaeda Reed earned a trip to the line with 26 seconds left in the half and split the free throws to give TXST a 32-30 halftime advantage.

ORU hit a three-pointer 25 seconds into the third to take a one-point lead and a Reed bucket put TXST back in front, but that was the last lead the Bobcats held. The Golden Eagles won the third quarter, 18-12, and took its largest lead of seven points at the 5:50 mark.

The teams traded six straight baskets over a span of six minutes until TXST scored on consecutive possessions with Reed's hook shot and Hood's made three at the 2:28 interval. The Golden Eagles responded 30 seconds later, and Johnson responded with a scoring lay in with 1:32 left to cut it to two, 59-57. Texas State forced two ORU turnovers and had a chance to tie or take the lead but committed an offensive foul and missed a short jump shot with under 30 seconds left.

Hood led TXST in points and rebounds (8) and was joined by Johnson (14) and Reed (12) in double figures. Reed has scored at least 12 points in both of TXST's games this year.

Rylie Torrey led ORU with 21 points and connected on six field goals and made all six of her free throw tries. Karly Gore recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. TXST was outrebounded, 47-33.

TXST returns to Strahan Arena at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 16th against Texas Permian Basin.
