AUSTIN, Texas – With the help of a suicide squeeze, Texas squeaked past Texas State 1-0 in the fall schedule finale on Friday night in Austin. The Bobcats finished the fall slate 6-2 with a win over Southeastern Conference opponent Mississippi State.
How it Happened
Junior pitcher Meagan King earned the start for the Bobcats and kept the Longhorns bats off balance during her four innings inside the circle. She danced around a one out single in the first and a two out single in the second to strand both runners.
Texas advanced a runner to third with one out in the bottom of the third on a single and an error, but King anchored down and induced a groundout to first and a popout to short
Two Longhorns reached scoring position to start the bottom of the fourth and King once again worked out of danger. A popout to second and back-to-back strikeouts retired the side to keep the game scoreless.
A leadoff double and a sacrifice bunt put the Longhorns in prime striking position in the bottom of the sixth. A suicide squeeze brought home the only run of the evening.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh, Texas State attempted to muster a comeback as freshman infielder Sara Vanderford reached but could not score.
Junior infielder Tara Oltmann registered the only Texas State hit with a two out single in the second.
Freshman pitcher Tori McCann worked the final two innings and allowed just two hits. King finished the evening with three strikeouts.
Texas State will look forward to the 2020 NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. on February 7th when it begins the regular season against South Alabama and Kentucky.
