Bobcats seize early control in 85-62 victory over Red Wolves

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Texas State women's basketball team (9-9, 4-2 Sun Belt) ran away from the Arkansas State Red Wolves (8-9, 3-3 Sun Belt), earning an 85-62 victory on Saturday afternoon inside First National Bank Arena.

Texas State's 85-point afternoon marked the highest single-game output for the Bobcats in Sun Belt Conference play since TXST defeated Appalachian State 92-50 on Feb. 3, 2018. The scoring outburst amounted to the most points scored against an NCAA Division I opponent this season.

"I said it in the pregame, but it is worth repeating. I thought the forward group played really well for us today," head coach Zenarae Antoine said. "They watched extra film during the scout and it showed. To outrebound this team by that type of margin (plus 16) is a huge accomplishment for this group and I am proud of their effort."

Senior guard Toshua Leavitt found her offensive groove early in the game and ended with 31 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the floor and 7-of-13 from behind the 3-point line. She also added a career-high five steals.

The game marked the fourth 30-point outing of her career and second this season. Her seven made triples gave her 26 career games with at least five made 3-point field goals, five coming during her senior campaign.

Texas State received double-figure scoring outings from freshman forward Da'Nasia Hood and sophomore forward Jayla Johnson. Hood posted her best scoring output of her Sun Belt career with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. She also grabbed four rebounds. Johnson added 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting and seven boards.

Arkansas State had a pair of players reach the 10-point plateau. Freshman guard Jordan Elder netted a career-high 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting from behind the arc. Junior guard Payton Tennison tallied 10 points for the Red Wolves.

Texas State roared out of the gates to seize control of the game in the early stages of the first quarter. The Bobcats scored the first 13 points of the game, seven coming off the right hand of Leavitt. Arkansas State burned two quick timeouts in the quarter in an attempt to slow down the Bobcat attack. TXST ended the first 10 minutes of play up 23-7, the third time this season in which the Cats scored 20-plus points in the opening frame.

Leavitt guided the Bobcats into the halftime break with a 20-point advantage. She tallied 19 of her game-high 31 points in the first half as Texas State led 41-21 at the break.

She remained hot through the third quarter as she and Johnson combined for 22 points in the frame. The duo outscored the Red Wolves 22-15 by themselves in the quarter. Leavitt made 4-of-5 3-point attempts, while Johnson converted 5-of-6 attempts inside the arc. Texas State led 69-36 with 10 minutes to play.

The Red Wolves upped the offensive intensity in the final stanza, scoring 26 points in the fourth. However, the 33-point TXST advantage was insurmountable as the game was never closer than a 19-point lead for the visiting Cats in the fourth quarter.

Up next, Texas State will face a pair of familiar foes in rematches with Georgia State and Georgia Southern. TXST and GSU will play at 7 p.m. on Jan. 24, while the GS game will tip at 2 p.m. on Jan. 26. Both games will be played at Strahan Arena.
