TXST offense held to season low in loss to GSU

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team (9-10, 4-3 Sun Belt) produced a season-low 34 points in a home loss to the Georgia State Panthers (10-8, 4-3 Sun Belt) on Thursday night inside Strahan Arena by a final tally of 57-34.

The 34-point output on the offensive end of the floor was the lowest single-game effort since a 90-24 setback at No. 3 Baylor on Dec. 6, 2016 and the least amount of points ever scored in a conference game by the Bobcats. The defensive effort from GSU marked the fewest points allowed since holding Morris Brown to 30 points in an 89-30 win on Dec. 14, 2002.

"I cannot hide the fact that I am very disappointed in our inability to stay poised and find the next gear," head coach Zenarae Antoine said. "We have to move forward from this, period."

Junior guard Brooke Holle was the lone Bobcat to record double-figures in the scoring column. She scored 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting inside the 3-point line. Holle added five rebounds and one steal in 31 minutes of game action.

Texas State shot 15-of-54 (27.8 percent) from the floor and failed to make a 3-point attempt in 10 tries. The Panthers held an eight-rebound advantage, were plus-12 in paint points and converted eight more free throw attempts than the Bobcats.

Georgia State was led by a career-effort from senior forward Allison Williams. She tallied 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting and ripped down a game-high nine rebounds. The Sun Belt Conference's fourth leading scorer, sophomore guard Jada Lewis, accumulated 14 points and two steals.

Texas State jumped out to a 12-6 advantage on a fast break layup from senior guard Toshua Leavitt with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter. Georgia State would score 28 of the next 30 points in the game, turning a six-point deficit into a 34-14 lead with 9:34 remaining in the third quarter.

Included in the extended Panther run was a 20-2 second quarter. The Texas State offense was smothered by the length and aggression of the Georgia State zone. As a result, the Cats made 1-of-12 (8.3 percent) shots in the quarter.

Up next, Texas State will square off with Georgia Southern at 2 p.m. on Jan. 26 inside Strahan Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
