Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Texas State falls short at Little Rock, 62-47

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Texas State women's basketball team (8-9, 3-2 Sun Belt) was outscored 35-20 in the second half against the Little Rock Trojans (8-8, 4-1 Sun Belt) and eventually fell 62-47 on Thursday evening inside Jack Stephens Center.

"We had too many turnovers against a really good team," head coach Zenarae Antoine said. "We cannot turn the ball over as much as we did and expect to come out with a win. We are a young team, played a bunch of young players and it showed."

Senior guard Toshua Leavitt led the Bobcats in scoring with 15 points. She connected on 6-of-13 field goals and 3-of-5 shots from behind the 3-point line. Freshman guard Kennedy Taylor showed her potential, scoring a season-best 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. Senior forward Zandra Emanuel continued her strong league play with nine points and a team-best 10 rebounds.

Little Rock boasted a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures. Junior guard Kyra Collier led the Trojans with 16 points, sophomore guard Tori Lasker added 14 points and sophomore guard Terrion Moore tallied 11 points. Senior forward and preseason Sun Belt player of the year Ronjanae DeGray compiled 13 points and 11 rebounds for the home team.

After scoring 17 first quarter points on 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) shooting, the Bobcats managed just 30 points on 13-of-35 (37.1 percent) in the final 30 minutes of play. Texas State yielded 15 turnovers in a low-possession contest, allowing LR to counter with 20 points off turnovers.

Texas State survived an early scare when Leavitt was ushered back to the locker room. TXST was leading 12-8 with 3:39 left in the first quarter when Leavitt was taken off the floor. Freshman guard Kennedy Taylor helped keep the Bobcats in the lead, scoring the final five TXST points of the quarter. The visiting Bobcats held a 17-14 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.

Defense was the name of the game in the second quarter as the pace of the game slowed. Little Rock outscored Texas State in the frame, 13-10, to even the score at 27-27 heading into the halftime break.

Leavitt canned a 3-pointer to open the second half festivities, but it was all Trojans after the triple at the 9:48 mark in the third frame. Little Rock scored the next six points of the game to gain the advantage at 35-30 and would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.

Texas State pulled within three points with the score sitting at 42-39 with 1:24 left in the third quarter. LR closed the quarter and opened the fourth quarter on a 17-2 extended run to push the lead up to 59-41 with 5:09 to play.

Up next, TXST will have a quick turnaround, playing the Arkansas State Red Wolves at 4 p.m. on Jan. 19 at First National Bank Arena.
