Hard Fought Match Comes Up Short for Bobcats at No. 18 Longhorns

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas State soccer team battled hard against 18th-ranked Texas but came up short thanks two unfortunate bounces fell 2-1 Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 2-5-0 on the season while the Longhorns are now 5-0-1 overall.

After Texas took four of the first five shots of the match, it was a Bobcat finding the back of the net first. Kaylee Davis netted her third goal of the season halfway through the 16th minute, placing the ball into the bottom right corner from 14 yards out. Sydney Kammer won a ball in the air that went to Renny Moore, who slotted a through ball for Davis' score. It was the first time that the Longhorns had trailed all season (488:13).

UT nearly equalized halfway through the 25th minute but were whistled for being offsides. Two minutes later the Longhorns did knot the score at 1-1 when Cyera Hintzen ripped a hard shot that deflected off a TXST defender trying to clear the ball and into the net.

In the 31st minute, Kathryn Budde went up to battle for a cross into the box but a Longhorn was able to get her head on the ball first. It bounced off the crossbar and back into the play, where it was eventually cleared away.

Halfway through the 36th minute Texas took a 2-1 advantage when Katie Glenn's shot from 15 yards out squeaked by Budde's hand and the right post.

The Bobcats' best opportunity in the second half to tie the match came in the 62nd minute when Hannah Solano sent in a cross from the left side. Davis was able to get behind the defender but unable to connect her head with the ball.

Davis led Texas State with two shots. Only other players to attempt a shot were Sarah Everett and Moore.

Budde made a save in the first half while Heather Martin recorded two stops in the second half.

Next for TXST is the Sun Belt Conference opener on Friday, Sept. 7 against ULM. The contest will kickoff at 7 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
