LAFAYETTE, La. – After falling behind with almost 20 minutes left in regulation, the Texas State soccer team fought back to tie the match before coming away with the road victory 2-1 in double overtime over Louisiana at the Ragin' Cajun Soccer/Track Complex on
Ally Kewish's golden goal.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 4-5-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Ragin' Cajuns drop to 1-7-2 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.
Kaylee Davis had a great look on goal 15 seconds into the match. Her shot was blocked and squirted just past the left post for a corner kick.
Placing the lone shot attempt on goal for the Bobcats was
Kelly Barbalias. The senior took a long ripe from 25 yards out in the seventh minute.
TXST would take three more shots in the opening 45 minutes, two coming from Davis. However, none of them would threaten the Cajuns keeper.
Louisiana's best chance came in the 42
nd minute when a miscommunication between
Heather Martin and a defender allow the ball to squirt free and leave an open goal. Fortunately for the Bobcats the Ragin' Cajuns were unable to get a shot off.
Davis had the first chance for either team on goal in the 56
th minute. She took a chip shot from inside the box on the right side that had some curl on it. UL's goalkeeper came up with a diving stop to keep the match scoreless.
The Cajuns struck late in the 69
th minute on a high shot from Madysin Girouard past the hands of Martin. They were helped out as a Bobcat was tripped up just as she was going to double team Girouad.
Martin came up with two big saves in a two-minute span off of corner kicks in the 76
th and 77
th minutes to keep the Bobcats at a 1-0 deficit.
In the middle of the 79
th minute,
Mackenzie Smith laid off a pass from the end line to
Genesis Turman. The junior took a one-touch shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced back out. Davis was there for the follow up to head the ball over a Cajun defender and into the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
In the 81
st minute,
Sarah Everett got her head on the ball off a corner kick and sent it towards the left post. The keeper made a diving stop to prevent the goal.
Smith took a crack at goal from the top of the 18-yard box after a bounce. However, the shot went straight to the goalkeeper to again keep the score tied.
The best chance for either team in the first overtime period came in the 99
th minute when the Cajuns sent in a corner kick. Kacie Pou headed the ball and thankfully went wide of the right post.
Kewish netted the match-winner in late in the 108
th minute, slotting her shot low to beat the keeper. Sending in the through ball to the freshman was Barbalias for her first career assist.
Pacing the Bobcats with a match-high six shots was Davis.
Jordan Kondikoff added two shot attempts as the only other player on the team to take multiple shots.
Martin finished the night with five saves and improved to 4-2-0 on the season between the posts. It was her 18
th career victory and moved her into a tie for fifth with Natalie Gardini (2007-09) in program history.
Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting with Sun Belt preseason favorite South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama at 1 p.m.
