NEW ORLEANS – Texas State senior kicker
James Sherman was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after setting school records for most field goals made and attempted in a game when he made five of his six attempts against Texas Southern.
A native of Montgomery, Ala., Sherman also tied a school record and equaled the fourth-highest point total in Sun Belt Conference history when he scored a career-high 18 points to lead Texas State to a 36-20 victory over Texas Southern.
His previous career high was two field goals made last season against Houston Baptist and Appalachian State. His five field goals are the second-highest total in Sun Belt history. He had two career-long 41-yard field goals and averaged 61.2 yards on nine kickoffs with five touchbacks.
Last spring, Sherman was named the 2017 male Scholar-Athlete of the Year after completing his bachelor's degree in political science last December. He is pursuing a second bachelor's degree in economics. A three year letterman as a kicker for the football team, Sherman is a three-time Bobcat Academic Excellence and one-time Star of Excellence recipient.
He was named to the Sun Belt Commissioner's List three times, and is a four-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), current SAAC president and vice-chair of the Sun Belt Conference SAAC. He also is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action, and is serving as a senator for the Texas State Student Government.
