SAN MARCOS, Texas – In a match that saw possession be dominated by UTSA, it was the Texas State soccer team that came away with a 1-0 victory Sunday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex thanks to
Kaylee Davis' goal in the 88
th minute.
Â
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 1-1-0 on the year while the Roadrunners drop to 1-1-0.
Â
Right out of the gate saw UTSA put pressure on the TXST defense consistently. The visitors outshot the Bobcats 9-3 in the first half with a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Â
The first chance of the night came late in the fourth minute from
Jordan Kondikoff when the junior ripped a shot from just outside the penalty box. However, the ball sailed just over the crossbar.
Â
In the 21
st minute,
Ally Kewish had her shot attempt blocked. The ball bounced to
Jamie Brown but her crack at goal was halted by the Roadrunners' goalkeeper.
Â
After halftime, Texas State won a free kick close to the penalty box in the 49
th minute. Instead of sending the ball into the box, Brown laid the ball off to
Renny Moore. The sophomore took two touches and unleashed a shot at the net that whizzed by outside of the right post.
Â
The next great opportunity for the Bobcats was in the 75
th minute that saw Davis' first shot of the match be blocked. The ball stayed in the box and bounced towards the left side and an oncoming
Cameron Hart. Her attempt was on target but corralled by the keeper.
Â
Davis' breakthrough came with 2:29 left in the match. The scoring started when
Genesis Turman got control of a long ball hit down field by a UTSA player. She then passed towards an open
Haley Groff running down the right side. After a touch to get the ball on her right foot, the sophomore sent a pass downfield to Davis that went through the wickets of a Roadrunner defender. Davis got control of the ball and sent a rocket into the left, back corner of the net.
Â
Â
Both Davis and Kondikoff led the team with two shot attempts apiece.
Â
Heather Martin recorded seven saves in recording her first shutout of the season and the seventh of her career.
Â
Next on the slate for TXST is a road match against McNeese on Friday at 7 p.m. It is the first of five consecutive contests away from the friendly confines of the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
